Set up a Combo bundle

Sell a fixed set of products together at a discount, right on a product page.

A Combo bundle sells a fixed set of products together at a discount, right on a product page. Shoppers pick a set, such as a coffee and a decaf, and both products go to the cart together at the set's price. Use it for kits, starter packs and products that are often bought together.

Combo bundle is included on every Appstle Bundles plan. In the cart and at checkout, each product of a set is its own line. If you want the set to show as one line, sell it as a Classic bundle instead.

Before you start

  • Make sure the products you want to use are active. Draft products don't show on your store.

  • Turn on the Appstle Bundles app embed in your theme. Step 4 of the editor tells you whether it's on. Without it, shoppers don't see the offer and can't add a set, so no set gets its discount.

Create a Combo bundle

  1. In your Shopify admin, open the Appstle Bundles app and go to Bundles & Discounts.

  2. Click Create offer.

  3. Under Buy products together, select Combo bundle.

  4. Click Start with Combo bundle.

The editor opens with five steps on the left, a preview in the middle and the settings for the current step on the right. Click Try it above the preview to pick a set as a shopper would. To change one part of the offer, click that part in the preview.

Step 1: Products in the set

Choose the products whose pages show the offer, then build the sets shoppers pick from.

  1. Under Shown on, click Add products and choose the products and their variants. The offer shows on each product's page while one of the variants you chose is selected, and on each page that product is the first item of every set.

  2. Under Sets shoppers pick from, open a set. The first row, This product, is the product on the page. Click Add a product to add the other items, and use the quantity box on each row to set how many of it go in each set. If you pick more than one variant of a product, the row shows Shoppers pick from N variants, and shoppers choose the variant from a menu on the set's card.

  3. Click Add another set to offer more sets. Drag a set by its handle to change the order, or use its ... menu to Duplicate or Delete it.

Shoppers pick one set, and each set adds all its products to the cart together at that set's discount. A set needs at least two items: this product and one more.

Click the star on a set to have it selected when the page opens. Only one set can have the star. With no star, no set is selected until a shopper picks one, and your theme's Add to cart button adds only this product.

More options in a set. Open More options in a set to change how it sells:

Option

What it does

Sell the set with fewer products

Shoppers keep the set's discount when some products are out of stock or removed from the cart, as long as this product stays and the set still has the number of products you set under At least N products in the cart, this product included. Free gifts still need the whole set.

Shoppers choose N of these products

Shoppers tick exactly N of the set's other products, and only those are added, at their set discounts. This product is always added. Leave it empty to add every product. It needs a set of at least three items and shows only when Let shoppers choose which products to add is on. Shoppers see a line like Choose 2 · 1 selected above the products, in English only.

Free gifts. Click Add a free gift in a set to give a product free with it, and use its quantity box to set how many come with each set. Gifts are free only when the whole set is in the cart, and shoppers can pick a gift only while every product in the set is in stock.

Click ... on a gift, then Gift settings, to change the text shown with the gift (the default is + FREE Gift), add the gift as a one-time purchase even when shoppers subscribe to the set, or show the gift's original price.

Options for the whole offer. Below all the sets, the offer has its own More options:

  • Let shoppers choose which products to add: adds Shoppers choose to each set. The page's product is always added and doesn't count toward the number shoppers choose.

  • Let shoppers buy several sets at once: shows a quantity stepper on the selected set. Each extra set adds its products and gifts again at the same discount. Most sets in one purchase limits the stepper only: shoppers can still add the set again, and each one is discounted.

Step 2: Set price

Each set has its own price. Under the set's name, choose what Shoppers get.

  • % off the set: every product in the set, this product included, gets the same percentage off. Enter 0 to 100 under Discount. A new set starts at 20%.

  • Each product its own discount: give each product a percentage or an amount off. An amount comes off the product's whole line once per set, not off each unit, and never more than the product costs. For example, with 2 bags of Decaf Coffee at $18 each and $5 off, each set saves $5 on the two bags together.

A combo has no fixed set price: use a percentage or an amount off instead. Under each set, a line shows the set price and your saving, like $32.00 for the set · Save $8.00 (20%). Your margin shows your margin on the set when every product has a cost per item in Shopify, No cost per item when one doesn't, and Under cost when the set sells for less than it costs.

Purchase options. Below the sets, this group controls how the offer works with subscriptions:

Setting

What it does

Purchase type

One-time and subscriptions (the default), One-time purchases only or Subscriptions only. With One-time purchases only, the sets hide while a shopper has a subscription plan selected. With Subscriptions only, the sets show once a shopper picks a plan on the page, unless Show purchase options in the offer is on.

Discount on renewals

Under More options. Choose Every order, or choose The first orders and enter the Number of orders, counted from each subscription's first order. At checkout, renewal prices can show without the discount. Your Discount on renewals setting decides which orders get it.

Show purchase options in the offer

Shoppers choose one-time or subscribe inside the offer. Leave it off if your subscription app already shows its own options on the product page. When it's on, you choose the Layout, the Position (Below the sets or Above the sets), the titles and subtitles of the options, and whether to Preselect the subscription option. It can't be turned on with One-time purchases only.

Let shoppers switch to your one-time offer

Under More options, with Subscriptions only. Adds a One-time / Subscribe and save switch on the product page. The one-time side uses the product's live one-time Combo bundle, so create that offer too. While the switch is on, Show purchase options in the offer is off.

Step 3: Look and texts

This step sets how the offer looks and the words shoppers read.

  • Look: start from a look, such as Brand style, Clean, Bold or Soft. A look copies its colors into this offer, and you can change any color after. To set your store's brand style, see Set your brand style: colors, corners and fonts.

  • Layout: Stacked shows one set under another, 3 across shows three sets per row, on phones too, and 2 across shows two per row.

  • Names: Title shoppers see shows above the offer, and you can turn off Show the title on your store to hide it. Name at checkout is optional and shows next to the discount in the cart and at checkout. If it's empty, the title is used. Name in your admin is only for you and your team.

  • Texts for each set: click a set to edit its Title, Subtitle, Savings badge (next to the title), Badge (above the set) and Badge style, Simple or Most popular. Use {{saved_total}} for the money saved and {{saved_percentage}} for the percentage, once in each text. A new set starts with the title Complete the bundle and the subtitle Save {{saved_total}}!. A badge shows only after you pick its style.

  • Texts for each set → More options: Image shows a 48 px image (JPG, PNG or WebP) instead of the set's round selector.

  • Add to cart: with Add to cart button in the offer off, your theme's Add to cart and Buy it now buttons add the selected set. Turn it on to show the offer's own button under the sets. Your theme's button then adds only this product, at full price. On a landing page, the offer's own button always shows.

  • Store texts: the Add to cart button text is shared by all your offers. Click Edit store texts to change it.

  • Colors and sizes: click Use theme colors everywhere or Reset sizes and styles. Colors you leave empty follow your theme. Borders, dividers and the offer's button match your theme only when Match my store on Combo bundles is on. The note below says whether it's on, and Open display settings takes you to it. To style each part, click Fine-tune every part on the Design tab.

On the Design tab, click a part in the preview to fine-tune it: Title, Set cards, Set title, Set subtitle, Badges, Products, Total and savings or Add to cart. Under Products, Products layout sets how the items inside a set show: Classic, Cards with + (a plus sign between product cards) or Side by side.

Under Total and savings, Show the subscription price as the price before discount is on by default: when a shopper picks a subscription, the crossed-out price is the subscription price. Turn it off to cross out the one-time price instead. It changes only the prices shown, not what shoppers pay. Below it, under More options, Show compare-at prices uses a product's higher compare-at price as the price before discount.

Step 4: Where, who and when

Choose where the offer shows, who gets it and when it runs.

  • Where it shows: the offer shows near the Add to cart button on the product pages you chose under Shown on. The step tells you whether your app embed is on, and Check again checks it again. To place the offer somewhere else on the page, click Add the block in your theme editor under Custom location (optional), then press Save there. Where the Appstle Combo Bundle block is, the offer shows instead.

  • On a landing page: use the landing page snippet in Design → Add blocks manually. One snippet shows the sets of one product, so add one snippet per product.

  • Who gets it: choose Everyone or Customers with tags. With tags, fill in Only customers with one of these tags, Not for customers with any of these tags, or both. Tags must match the customer's tags exactly, including capital letters, and work only for logged-in customers, so guests don't see the offer.

  • Who gets it → More options: Not for B2B buyers hides the offer from shoppers buying for a B2B company. While tags or a usage limit are set, Still show the offer to shoppers who can't get it shows the offer to everyone, but only eligible customers get the discount at checkout. If the store setting Show Discount To Non-eligible Customers is on, this switch is always on.

  • When: choose When I launch or On a schedule with a start and an end. The end must be after the start. On a saved offer, When I launch is called Right away.

  • Works together with: three switches, Other product discounts, Order discounts and Shipping discounts. When a shopper qualifies for this offer and another discount, Shopify applies both only if both allow it. Otherwise it applies the one that saves the shopper more.

  • Limits: Uses per customer takes a whole number from 1 to 999. Uses can be counted only for logged-in customers, so while a limit is set, guests don't see the offer unless Still show the offer to shoppers who can't get it is on. Then they see it and pay full price.

  • Order tags: Tags to add are added in the background to each order the app records for this offer, up to 500 characters in all. Add a variable inserts the offer's code, title or type. Shopify discount tags are added to the Shopify discount this offer creates, so you can find it in Shopify.

  • After shoppers add it: Cart, Cart drawer, Checkout or Stay on the page. This applies to the offer's own Add to cart button and to landing pages. Your theme's own button follows your theme.

Step 5: Review and launch

The last step lists Checks for your offer. If a check needs your attention, the step tells you what to fix. For example, Set 1 gives no discount. means a set has 0% off. When you edit a saved offer, this step is called Checks.

When everything looks right, click Launch offer. The offer goes live on your store in a few seconds. To save your work without launching, click Save as draft.

Each live Combo bundle uses one of the 25 automatic discounts Shopify allows. If your store already has 25 active or scheduled, Shopify won't accept another. Turn one off in Shopify, or save this offer as a draft.

What shoppers see

On the product page, shoppers see one card for each set, near the Add to cart button. A card shows a round selector, the title, the savings badge and subtitle if you set them, the set price with the original price crossed out, and the products in the set. A product's name opens its page in a new tab.

Clicking a card selects it, and clicking the selected card again unselects it. A set with a product that's out of stock can't be picked, unless it can sell with fewer products. When shoppers click Add to cart, the whole set goes to the cart.

In the cart and at checkout, each product is its own line with its discounted price. The saving shows under your Name at checkout, or under the offer's title if that is empty.

Things to know

  • A set gets its discount only when every product in it is in the cart. With Sell the set with fewer products, the minimum number of products is enough, as long as this product is one of them. Free gifts still need the whole set.

  • Only products added through the offer count toward a set. A product added from its own page, or with your theme's button while Add to cart button in the offer is on, is charged full price.

  • When a shopper adds a set twice, both sets get the discount.

  • A set with an amount off takes that amount off once per set, so two sets take it off twice.

  • When more than one live Combo bundle is shown on a product, the page shows all of them, one under another.

  • With Subscriptions only, every product in a set has to go in on a subscription plan. Each product uses the plan the shopper picked or, if it doesn't have that plan, its own plan with the same frequency. A product with no such plan goes in as a one-time purchase, and the set gets no discount.

  • Combo bundles have no announcement bar.

  • An offer's settings must fit in the 10,000 bytes Shopify allows for one discount. If saving fails with This offer is too big for Shopify, remove some products or gifts, then save again.

FAQs

Why doesn't the offer show on my product page?

Check these:

  1. The offer is live, not a draft, and its schedule has started.

  2. The product is under Shown on and is active in Shopify.

  3. The selected variant is one you chose under Shown on. The offer hides while another variant is selected.

  4. The Appstle Bundles app embed is on in your live theme.

  5. The shopper can get it. With customer tags, only logged-in customers with a matching tag see it, so check while logged in as one, not in a private window. With Uses per customer set, guests don't see the offer unless Still show the offer to shoppers who can't get it is on.

  6. Purchase type is Subscriptions only. The sets show once a shopper picks a plan on the page. To show the plans inside the offer, turn on Show purchase options in the offer.

  7. You're checking your live store. In the theme editor, app blocks show only a placeholder.

Why can't shoppers pick a set?

A product in the set is out of stock. The set can't be picked until it's back, unless you turn on Sell the set with fewer products and enough products are in stock.

Why does only this product go to the cart?

Check these:

  1. A set is selected. With no star on a set, nothing is selected until the shopper picks one.

  2. Add to cart button in the offer is off. While it's on, your theme's button adds only this product, at full price.

  3. With Shoppers choose N of these products, the shopper ticked exactly that number.

  4. With Subscriptions only, the shopper chose a subscription plan.

If all of these are right and your theme's button still adds only this product, your theme adds to the cart in a way the app can't catch. Turn on Add to cart button in the offer so shoppers add the set with the offer's own button.

Why didn't a cart get the discount?

Check these:

  1. The cart holds every product of the set, in the quantity of the set, all added through the offer. Products added from their own pages don't count. Remove an item and the discount goes, unless Sell the set with fewer products allows it.

  2. Every line matches your Purchase type. With One-time purchases only, a single subscription line removes the discount from the whole set. With Subscriptions only, a single one-time line does the same, unless it's a gift with Add the gift as a one-time purchase on. A product with no plan at the frequency the shopper picked is added as one-time.

  3. The cart has another discount, and Works together with doesn't allow that kind.

Can shoppers buy more than one set?

Yes. Turn on Let shoppers buy several sets at once in the offer's More options to show a quantity stepper. Shoppers can also add the set again, and every complete set is discounted.

Can I give a free gift with a set?

Yes. Click Add a free gift in the set in Step 1. The gift is free when the whole set is in the cart.

Does a Combo bundle work with subscriptions?

Yes. Use Purchase options in Step 2. When a shopper subscribes, each product in the set goes in with the plan they picked or, if the product doesn't have that plan, its own plan with the same frequency. A product with no such plan goes in as a one-time purchase, so with Subscriptions only, give every product in the set a matching plan.

How do I show the set as one line at checkout?

Sell it as a Classic bundle: one Shopify product with its own price.
