A Buy X get Y offer gives shoppers a product free or at a discount when they buy another product, for example a free Decaf Coffee with a Colombia Coffee. Shoppers see both lists on the product page and add the whole set with one button. Use it to sell a second product alongside the first, or to reward a purchase with a gift.
Buy X get Y is included on every Appstle Bundles plan. See a live example on the Appstle demo store. To give more free items of the same product as shoppers buy more, see Set up a Buy X, get Y free offer instead.
Before you start
Make sure the products you want to use are active. Draft products don't show on your store.
Turn on the Appstle Bundles app embed in your theme. Step 4 of the editor tells you whether it is on.
Add the Appstle Buy X Get Y block to your product template. Without it, products using that template don't show the offer. Step 4 and Step 5 of the editor show you where it is missing and add it for you.
Create a Buy X get Y offer
In your Shopify admin, open the Appstle Bundles app and go to Bundles & Discounts.
Click Create offer.
Under Buy products together, select Buy X get Y.
Click Start with Buy X get Y.
The editor opens with five steps on the left, a preview in the middle and the settings for the current step on the right. Click Next at the bottom of the settings panel to move on, or click a step on the left.
Click Try it above the preview to use the offer as a shopper would. To change one part of the offer, such as the discount banner or the sign-in message, open the Design tab at the top and click that part in the preview.
Step 1: Buy and get
Choose the products shoppers buy and the products they get.
Under Shoppers buy, click Add products and choose the products. Use the quantity box on each product to set how many shoppers buy.
Under They get, click Add products and choose the products shoppers get, with the quantity for each.
For each list, choose how shoppers use it, as described below.
On the buy side, How many of these sets how shoppers use the list:
All of them: shoppers buy every item in the list, in these quantities.
One of them: shoppers pick one item in the widget. The first item is picked to start.
Some: shoppers pick exactly the number you enter under How many. Leave it empty to let them pick any number.
On the get side, Which ones works the same way. All of them gives every item in the list. One they pick lets shoppers pick one item in the widget, and the first item is picked to start. Some works as it does on the buy side.
Shoppers add the whole set with one button. Checkout gives the discount only to that exact set, so changing a quantity in the cart, or adding the offer again, cancels it.
Step 2: Discount
Choose what shoppers pay for each list.
Under On the items they get, choose Free, % off, Amount off or Full price, and enter the value for % off or Amount off. A percentage comes off each item they get. An amount comes off the items they get together, once per set.
Under On the items they buy, choose Full price, % off or Amount off. This discount comes off the items they buy that aren't also in the get list. The widget's total shows it, but the item rows show full prices.
Optional: in Name at checkout, enter the name shoppers see for this discount in the cart, at checkout and on the order. If you leave it empty, the offer's title is used.
If both lists are set to Full price, the editor warns you that shoppers pay full price for everything in the offer. Choose a reward for the items they get.
Under Purchase options:
Purchase type: One-time and subscriptions, One-time purchases only or Subscriptions only. Every item in the set must be the chosen kind of purchase.
Discount on renewals (with subscriptions): Every order, or The first orders with the Number of orders.
More options: choose the selling plans shoppers can pick, and where the plan comes from. With The Buy X get Y product, each item with subscription plans gets its own plan menu in the offer. With Your subscription widget, the offer shows no plan menus and uses the plan shoppers pick in your subscription widget.
Step 3: Look and texts
Choose how the offer looks and what shoppers read.
Look: start from Brand style, Clean, Bold, Soft, Luxe or Playful. Picking a look copies its colors into this offer, and you can still change any color after.
Title: the heading above the widget on your product page.
Name in your admin: only you and your team see it. Shopify's Discounts page lists the offer as the title followed by this name in brackets.
Colors: change the Accent, Text, Title and product names, Card, Behind the card and button colors. The yellow behind the discount banner and the gray line around the card can't be changed here. To change them, add Custom CSS in Design → Custom CSS and HTML.
Show the regular price in the struck-through total: for the items they buy, the struck-through total uses each variant's regular price instead of its subscription price.
List each variant as its own item: lets shoppers pick more than one variant of a product, like 3 flavors. It applies to both lists.
The yellow banner above the items they get shows the message for your discount: Free gift message (“Enjoy the free product” by default), Percentage discount message or Fixed discount message. When the items they get are full price, shoppers don't see the banner. Under Store texts, you can also change the Free label, Total, Add to cart button, Pick any number of products and Pick any number of gifts. Store texts are shared by all your offers. Click Edit store texts to change them.
Step 4: Where, who and when
Choose where the offer shows, who can get it and when it runs.
Where it shows: the offer shows on the page of any product in either list, when the Appstle Buy X Get Y block is on that product's template. To show it somewhere else, such as a collection page or a custom page, copy a snippet from Design → Where offers show. If the check says your app embed is off, click Turn it on, save in the theme editor, then click Check again.
Blocks: under Default product template, No block yet means the block is missing. Click Add it for me to open the theme editor with the block added, then press Save there. Products that share a template need the block added only once.
Announcement bar: turn on Show this offer in the announcement bar to tell shoppers how close they are to the offer and when they've unlocked it. Your store's announcement bar must be on too. If the editor says it's off, click Turn on the bar. The bar counts only items added from this widget, in the set's exact quantities.
After shoppers add it: in Where shoppers go after adding, choose The cart page, The cart drawer, Checkout or Stay on the page. If your theme has no cart drawer, shoppers stay on the page. Under More options, Add to cart waits for every choice hides the Add to cart button and the total until shoppers pick all the items they buy and get.
Who gets it: Everyone, or Customers with tags. With tags, fill in Only customers with one of these tags, Not for customers with any of these tags, or both. Tags must match exactly, including capital letters, and work only for logged-in customers, so guests can't add the offer until they log in. Under More options, Not for B2B buyers hides the offer from B2B buyers. Still show the offer to shoppers who can't get it shows it to shoppers who aren't eligible, at full price.
When: When I launch or On a schedule.
Limits: Uses per customer stops shoppers from adding the offer once they have used it that many times, and checkout stops giving it. Uses are counted only for logged-in customers, so guests see a sign-in message in the offer instead.
Works together with: let Other product discounts, Order discounts and Shipping discounts apply on the same order.
Order tags: in Tags to add, enter tags to add to each order that uses this offer. Click Add a variable to add the offer's code, title or type. In Shopify discount tags, add tags to the Shopify discount this offer creates, so you can find it in Shopify.
If more than one Buy X get Y offer matches a product, each shows its own widget. To show them as one dropdown instead, turn on Show several Buy X get Y discounts as one in Design → Display settings.
Step 5: Review and launch
The last step shows Checks and an At a glance summary of the offer. If a check needs your attention, the step tells you what to fix. For example, The block isn't on 1 of 1 product templates means products using that template won't show the offer. Click Add it for me to fix it. When you edit a saved offer, this step is called Checks.
When everything looks right, click Launch offer. The offer goes live on your store in a few seconds. To save your work without launching, click Save as draft.
Each live Buy X get Y offer uses one of the 25 automatic discounts Shopify allows. If your store already has 25 active or scheduled, Shopify won't accept another. Turn one off in Shopify, or save this offer as a draft.
What shoppers see
On the product page, shoppers see your title, the two lists with a + between them, the discount banner, the items they get, and a total. Free items are marked Free with their regular price struck through. Products with several variants have a variant menu, and items with subscription plans have a plan menu. One Add to cart button adds the whole set. In the cart and at checkout, each item is its own line, and the saving shows under your Name at checkout.
FAQs
Why doesn't the offer show on my product page?
Check these:
The offer is live, not a draft, and its schedule has started.
The product is in one of the two lists and is active in Shopify.
The Appstle Bundles app embed is on in your live theme.
The Appstle Buy X Get Y block is on the product template the product uses. Step 4 shows No block yet when it is missing.
The shopper can get it. With customer tags, only logged-in customers with a matching tag see it, so check while logged in as one, not in a private window. Customers who reached Uses per customer don't see it either.
You're checking your live store. In the theme editor, the block shows only a placeholder.
Why did the discount go away in the cart?
Checkout gives the discount only to the exact set shoppers added, and only when every item is the purchase type you chose in Purchase options. Changing a quantity in the cart, or adding the offer again, cancels it. To get the discount back, shoppers remove the set's items from the cart and add the set again from the product page.
Can I give a percentage or an amount off instead of free items?
Yes. In Step 2, choose % off or Amount off under On the items they get. You can also take a percentage or an amount off the items they buy.
Does a Buy X get Y offer work with subscriptions?
Yes. Under Purchase options in Step 2, choose a purchase type that includes subscriptions. Every item in the set must be the chosen kind of purchase.
What happens if two Buy X get Y offers match the same product?
Each one shows its own widget. To show them as one dropdown instead, turn on Show several Buy X get Y discounts as one in Design → Display settings.
