Set up pickup and delivery rates

Create the fees customers pay for store pickup and local delivery, add conditions, and choose what checkout shows.

Rates are the fees customers pay for store pickup and local delivery. You create them on the app's Rates page, and the app adds them to Shopify so they appear at checkout. Customers only see the rates that match what they chose in the cart widget.

This article covers pickup and delivery rates. Your shipping rates stay in Shopify's shipping settings.

Before you start

Add a rate

  1. In the app, go to Rates.

  2. Under Pickup Rates or Delivery Rates, click Add rate.

  3. Enter an Internal rate name. Only you see it, so make it easy to recognize, for example "Free delivery over $50 – Brooklyn".

  4. Enter the Rate name customers see at checkout, for example "Free local delivery".

  5. Enter the Rate amount. Enter 0 to make the rate free.

  6. Set any conditions you need. Each one is explained below.

  7. Click Save.

Your rates appear in the Pickup Rates and Delivery Rates cards. Click the pencil to edit a rate, or the bin to delete it.

Choose a rate type

The Rate type decides when the rate applies. Minimum and maximum values include the number you enter.

Rate type

Use it when

Fields

Flat

The fee is the same for every order.

None

Order Amount

The fee depends on the cart value, for example free delivery over $50.

Minimum order price, Maximum order price

Weight Based

The fee depends on the cart weight.

Weight unit, Minimum weight, Maximum weight

For example, to offer free delivery on orders of $50 or more, add a delivery rate with a Rate amount of 0, Rate type set to Order Amount and a Minimum order price of 50. Then edit your paid delivery rate, set its Rate type to Order Amount and give it a Maximum order price of 49.99, so customers see only one delivery option.

Limit a rate to some locations

Under Locations (Optional), search for and select the locations the rate applies to. Leave it empty to use the rate for all your locations. Customers who choose pickup or delivery from another location won't see this rate.

Charge by delivery area (delivery rates only)

Use Zip code validation to show a delivery rate only to customers in certain postal codes. To charge different fees by area, add one delivery rate per area.

  1. Choose Exact match, Partial match or Advanced postal code match.

  2. In Zip codes, enter the postal codes, separated by commas.

The options work like this:

Option

A customer's postal code matches when

Example

No validation

Always. Every customer can select the rate.

-

Exact match

It is exactly one of the codes you entered.

11249 matches 11249 only

Partial match

It starts with one of the codes you entered.

112 matches 11201 and 11249

Advanced postal code match

It fits a pattern, where _ is a space and * is any single character.

SW1_*** matches SW1 2AB

Show a rate only to some customers

  • Allowed customer tags (optional): only customers who are logged in and have one of these tags see the rate. Use it for perks like free delivery for members.

  • Restricted customer tags (optional): customers who are logged in and have one of these tags don't see the rate. Guests still see it.

Add a rate to some shipping destinations only

By default, the app adds the rate to every destination in your Shopify shipping settings. To limit it, under Restrictions, check Add this rate only to selected shipping destinations and choose the Shipping destinations. This limit doesn't apply while rate calculation is on (see below). Calculated rates are offered to every customer who chooses the rate's location.

What customers see at checkout

At checkout, the app hides the rates that don't match the customer's choice in the cart widget.

Customer chose

Rates shown at checkout

Store pickup

Your pickup rates for the chosen location.

Local delivery

Your delivery rates for the chosen location that match the customer's postal code.

Shipping

Your Shopify shipping rates. Pickup and delivery rates are hidden.

If more than one rate matches, the customer sees all of them and picks one.

Choose a fallback rate

If no rate matches what the customer chose, for example they chose pickup from a location that has no pickup rate, checkout shows your fallback option instead. This way the customer can still check out.

  1. On the Rates page, go to Fallback rates.

  2. Select Shipping, Pickup or Local Delivery.

  3. If you chose Pickup or Local Delivery, select the Pickup Location or Delivery Location whose rates should be shown.

  4. Click Save.

An option is greyed out with a reason, such as (Store pickup is not enabled) or (You don't have any pickup rates), until you fix what it names.

Let Appstle calculate rates for subscriptions

Shopify starts new subscriptions on the cheapest rate it can offer for the address, whatever the customer chose at checkout. So a customer who chose shipping could start on your free pickup rate. If you sell subscriptions, turn on Calculate Pickup and Local Delivery rates with Appstle to prevent this. Your rate amounts stay the same.

Availability: needs the Shopify Advanced or Plus plan, or third-party calculated rates on your Shopify plan. Not available if your store manages shipping rates in Shopify Markets.

  1. On the Rates page, under Rate calculation, click Turn on.

  2. Click Turn on again to confirm. The app adds "Appstle Pickup & Delivery" to your Shopify shipping zones and removes the flat pickup and delivery rates it created. Your shipping rates aren't changed. This takes up to a minute.

To go back, click Turn off and confirm. Your pickup and delivery rates return as flat rates in Shopify. If Shopify rejects the change either way, nothing is switched and the page shows Rate calculation was not changed.

Things to know

  • Edit rates in the app, not in Shopify. The app finds its rates in Shopify by their Rate name. If you rename one in Shopify's shipping settings, the app no longer recognizes it. It then treats it as one of your own shipping rates, so customers who choose shipping see it.

  • Give each rate its own Rate name. Two rates with the same name can't be told apart at checkout.

  • Not synced to Shopify. This label means Shopify hasn't accepted the rate yet, so it won't appear at checkout. Click Sync Rates at the top of the page to try again.

  • Rates and locations are linked. You can't delete a location while a rate uses it. Remove the location from the rate first.

  • Zip code validation on a rate is separate from delivery validation. The delivery validation in Settings → Local delivery decides whether a customer can choose local delivery at all. A rate's Zip code validation decides which delivery rate they see.

FAQs

Why does a pickup rate show up when a customer chooses shipping?

Shopify most likely has a copy of the rate under a name the app no longer uses, for example because it was renamed in Shopify. In Shopify, go to Settings → Shipping and delivery and delete the rate with the old name. Then click Sync Rates on the app's Rates page.

Can I offer free pickup?

Yes. Add a pickup rate with a Rate amount of 0. It shows as Free in the list.

Can I charge different delivery fees in different areas?

Yes. Add one delivery rate per area and use Zip code validation with that area's postal codes. You can also limit each rate to the location that delivers to that area.
