The cart widget is where customers choose how they want to receive an order: store pickup, local delivery or shipping. It appears on your cart page next to the checkout button. Customers pick an option, fill in what you ask for, such as a location, date, time or note, and check out. The app saves their choices on the order.
Before you start
Turn on the app embed so the widget shows in your theme. See Get started with Appstle Pickup & Delivery.
Turn on each option you offer. In the app, go to Settings and check that the Store pickup, Local delivery and Shipping cards show Enabled. To turn one on, open it and click Enable at the top.
Enable Store pickup or Local delivery on each location that offers it. Without such a location, the Store Pickup button doesn't show, and customers who select Local Delivery see Sorry, local delivery is not available for your selected items. See Add and manage pickup and delivery locations.
What customers see
Customers see a button for each option you offer. When they select one, the fields for that option appear below the buttons.
Store pickup
Customers see these fields, from top to bottom:
Pickup Locations: a card for each location that can take every item in the cart, showing its address. More information opens the location's opening hours and any details you add to it. The first location is selected for them unless you turn off Preselect first location in Settings → Store pickup.
Date: a date picker, if Enable pickup date picker is on for the location. Only days you offer pickup can be chosen.
Time: a list of pickup times for the chosen date, if Enable pickup time picker is on for the location.
Pickup note: a box for a message, if you turn on Enable pickup note in Settings → Store pickup. When a pickup date is required, it appears after the customer picks a date and time.
A text message opt-in checkbox, if you connect Postscript in Settings → Integrations and turn on a pickup text message in Settings → SMS.
In Settings → Store pickup, Enable Google Maps adds a map of your locations, and Enable geographic search adds an address search that lists the nearest locations first. Both need a Google Maps API key. To change the order of the cards, see Change the order of pickup locations.
Local delivery
What customers see first depends on the Validation option in Settings → Local delivery:
No validation (the default): there's no check. Customers go straight to the date, time and note fields you turned on.
Exact postal code match or Partial postal code match: customers enter their postal code and click the search button.
Customer within maximum radius, Customer within maximum driving distance or Customer within a custom-drawn zone: customers enter their address and pick a suggestion from the list. These need a Google Maps API key.
After a postal code check, customers you deliver to see Great! You are eligible for delivery., followed by the date, time and note fields you turned on in Settings → Local delivery. Everyone else sees Sorry, delivery is not available in your area. They can't check out with local delivery, but they can choose another option.
To set up delivery areas, see Limit local delivery to the areas you serve.
Shipping
By default, customers only see Please click the checkout button to continue. If you turn on the Date picker or Enable shipping note in Settings → Shipping, they see those fields instead.
Choose which options customers see
Change the order and the default option
In the app, go to Settings → Widget appearances.
Under Sort order, drag Shipping, Local delivery and Store pickup into the order you want.
To select shipping for customers by default, check Pre-select shipping option on cart page. Clear it to make customers choose.
Click Save.
Only the options you've turned on appear in the list.
Hide an option for some carts
Use Conditional activation on Settings → Store pickup, Settings → Local delivery or Settings → Shipping to offer an option only for some carts. You can set a minimum or maximum cart value or weight, or limit the option to certain product types, collections, vendors or tags.
When a cart doesn't qualify, the button stays, but customers who select it see a message and can't check out with that option.
For product type, collection, vendor or tag conditions, you can hide the button instead. Check Hide the pickup button in the widget, Hide the delivery button in the widget or Hide the shipping button in the widget.
For the steps, see Offer store pickup only for some carts and Offer local delivery only for some carts.
Store pickup hides itself when no location fits the cart
If no location can take every item in the cart, the Store Pickup button doesn't show. This happens when the cart has products a location doesn't offer, a purchase type it doesn't accept (subscription or one-time), or, if you turn on Enable pickup inventory in Settings → Inventory, items it doesn't have in stock.
Local delivery works differently: the button stays, and customers who select it see Sorry, local delivery is not available for your selected items.
What customers must do before checkout
The widget won't let customers check out until they've chosen an option and filled in everything you require. If something is missing, they see one of these messages after they click the checkout button:
What's missing | Customers see |
No option chosen (only when none is pre-selected) | Please select a delivery method to continue. |
Store pickup: no location | Please select a pickup location. |
Store pickup: no date or time, when Pickup date is required is on | Please select your preferred pickup date. / Please select your preferred pickup time. |
Store pickup: no note, when Pickup note is required is on | Please add a pickup note. |
Local delivery: no postal code, or one you don't deliver to | Please enter your postal code. / Sorry, delivery is not available in your area. |
Local delivery: no date or time, when Delivery date is required is on | Please select your preferred delivery date. / Please select your preferred delivery time. |
Local delivery: no note, when Delivery note is required is on | Please add a delivery note. |
Shipping: no date, when Shipping date is required is on | Please select your preferred shipping date. |
Shipping: no note, when Shipping note is required is on | Please add a shipping note. |
You can change this wording in Settings → Text and translations.
What is saved on the order
The app saves the customer's choices on the order as order attributes. Shopify shows them under Additional details on the order page. Empty fields are left out.
Store pickup: Delivery Type, the pickup location's name and address, Pickup Date, Pickup Time and Pickup Note.
Local delivery: Delivery Type, Delivery Date, Delivery Time, Delivery Note and Delivery Postal Code.
Shipping: Delivery Type, Shipping Date and Shipping Note.
Things to know
Customers can choose one option per order. They can't combine pickup and delivery in the same cart.
Choices are remembered. When a customer comes back to the cart, their option, location, date, time and note are filled in again. With a postal code check, they enter their postal code again.
Changing the cart can change the location. If the customer's location can no longer take the cart, the widget switches to the first location that can, or clears the choice if Preselect first location is off. The date and time stay only if they're still available.
Times are in the location's time zone. Pickup and delivery times are the ones you set for the location. Below the fields, the widget shows the location's time zone next to the customer's, for example Schedule time zone: America/New_York. Your time zone: America/Los_Angeles.
