Shop Settings holds the options that apply to every membership plan in your store: when members lose their perks after they pause or cancel, what happens when a member changes plan, how many memberships one customer can have, and which tags Appstle adds to member orders. Most options start with a sensible default, so visit this page only when you want to change how memberships behave.
Each section below matches a card on that page, in the same order.
Change and save your settings
In your Shopify admin, open Apps → Appstle Memberships.
Click More, then under General Settings click Shop Settings.
Change the options you want. Some options show extra fields when you tick them.
Click Save in the bar at the top of the page. To undo changes you haven’t saved, click Discard and confirm.
The More actions menu at the top of the page has two shortcuts. Activity Log shows the changes made to these settings. Sync Shop Details copies your time zone and currency from Shopify. Reload the page before you change anything else, or saving puts the old values back.
Store details
The first two cards, Time Zone Settings and General Settings, hold your store’s basics. Appstle fills them in from Shopify when you install the app.
Field | What it is |
Shop Time Zone and IANA Time Zone | Your store’s time zone. You can’t edit these here. If you change your store’s time zone in Shopify, click More actions → Sync Shop Details, then reload the page. |
Public Domain | The address shoppers use to visit your store, for example northside-coffee.com. Appstle uses it to build the link to the member portal in emails and messages. Required. |
Money Format | How Appstle shows prices in emails, in the member portal and on your storefront. If you change your store’s money format in Shopify, update it here too. Use single quotes instead of double quotes. Required. |
Currency Code | Your store’s currency code, for example USD. If you change your store’s currency in Shopify, click More actions → Sync Shop Details and reload the page, or update it here. Required. |
Member Portal Url | The web address of the member portal. The default is apps/memberships. Leave it as it is unless support asks you to change it. It must match the address Shopify gives the app, or the member portal doesn’t load. Required. |
All four required fields must have a value, or the page won’t save.
Storefront Settings
This card appears only while label translation is off. New installations already have it on, so you won’t see the card. Tick Enable Label Translation and click Enable in the pop-up to turn on multi-language wording for the widget and the member portal. You can’t turn it off again.
Non Member Messaging Settings
Use this card to show a banner at the bottom of every page to shoppers who aren’t logged in, for example to ask members to log in to see their perks. Logged-in customers never see it, whether or not they’re members, and a shopper who closes it doesn’t see it again during that visit. Set Display message for non-members to Enable and write the text in Banner Message for non-members. It’s off by default. For the full guide, see Non Member Messaging Settings.
The message members see is set separately, in the Discount Message section of each perk. See Add perks to a membership plan.
Membership Settings
These options control what happens when a membership pauses, cancels or reaches its end.
Option | What it does | Default for new stores |
Add membership's paused duration offset to next billing date on activation | When a paused member is activated again, the time they spent paused is added to their next billing date, so they get the days they paid for. Turning it on also removes the member’s perks as soon as they pause, and Appstle gives them back when the membership is activated. | Off |
Immediately revoke customer perks on membership pause | Removes the member’s tags, and so their perks, the moment the membership pauses. | Off |
Immediately revoke customer perks on membership cancellation | Removes the member’s tags, and so their perks, the moment the membership is cancelled. | Off |
Disable Banner Message for members | Hides the banner that members see at the bottom of the page when their member discount is applied. Members still get their discounts. | Off |
Pause memberships after reaching the automatic expiration of the plan | When a member has been billed the number of times set in the plan’s Automatic expiration, the membership pauses instead of expiring. | On |
When members lose perks
By default, a member who pauses or cancels keeps their perks until the end of the period they already paid for. Appstle removes their tags one second before the next billing date. Perks are removed at once in these cases:
The matching option is on: Immediately revoke customer perks on membership pause for a pause, or Immediately revoke customer perks on membership cancellation for a cancellation.
The member is still in a free trial.
The member’s latest renewal payment failed.
The membership is paused and Add membership's paused duration offset to next billing date on activation is on.
Important: Removing perks immediately takes away benefits the member has already paid for. Leave the “Immediately revoke” options off if you want members to keep their perks until the end of the period they paid for.
Member Settings
These options control plan changes, trials and how many memberships one customer can hold.
Option | What it does | Default for new stores |
Immediately charge/refund members on membership upgrade/downgrade | On: a plan change is charged or refunded at once and the new perks apply at once. Off: members are charged and get the new perks from their next billing date. | On |
Update max billing cycles on membership plan change | When a member switches plan, their membership takes the new plan’s Automatic expiration. If the new plan has none, the member keeps their current limit. | Off |
Schedule membership downgrades to end of billing cycle | A downgrade takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle. Upgrades aren’t affected. | Off |
Allow membership perks during trial | When off, perks don’t apply to members who are still in a trial. | On |
Allow membership per customer | Limits how many memberships one customer can have. See the next section. | Off |
Upgrades and downgrades
Appstle treats a change to a higher-priced plan as an upgrade and a change to a lower-priced plan as a downgrade. A change between plans with the same price always happens at once. Two options decide whether a change waits for the member’s next billing date:
Immediately charge/refund members on membership upgrade/downgrade off: upgrades and downgrades both wait.
That option on and Schedule membership downgrades to end of billing cycle on: only downgrades wait.
That option on and the schedule option off (the default): every change happens at once.
While a change is scheduled, the membership can’t be changed again, paused or cancelled. To remove the scheduled change, open the membership and click Cancel Upgrade or Cancel Downgrade in the banner at the top.
One membership per customer
Tick Allow membership per customer to limit how many memberships a customer can have. Shopify enforces the limit at checkout through a checkout rule, so first add the Membership Validations rule in Shopify under Settings → Checkout → Checkout rules. The Click here to turn on the extension. link under the option opens that page. Then choose a rule:
Rule | What a customer can do |
One Overall | Have one membership, ever. Any membership they already have, active, paused or cancelled, blocks another. |
One Active Overall | Have one active membership at a time. Paused and cancelled memberships don’t count. |
One Per Frequency | Have one membership on each plan. A membership they already have on a plan, active, paused or cancelled, blocks buying that plan again. Different plans are allowed, for example a Monthly plan and an Annual plan. |
One Active Per Frequency | Have one active membership on each plan. Paused and cancelled memberships don’t count. |
Use Duplicate membership checkout validation message to write what customers see at checkout when the rule blocks their order. Checkout can compare the cart with a customer’s memberships only when they’re logged in. Whatever rule you choose, one order can hold only one membership.
Appstle also checks every new membership after the order. If a customer with the same email already has a membership that the rule doesn’t allow, for example after a guest checkout, Appstle cancels the new membership with the reason “Auto membership canceled due to duplicate membership.” and sends the cancellation email. For setup steps and examples, see Limit how many memberships a customer can buy.
Warning: Appstle doesn’t refund the order of a membership it cancels this way. Refund it in Shopify if the customer was charged.
Email Discount Perks
A plan can have several Email Discount Code To Members perks. This card decides which of them members receive. It has no effect on plans with only one such perk.
With Send every email discount perk in a membership plan off, members get only the first email discount perk in the plan’s perk list. With it on, they get every one, each in its own email with its own code:
Perks set to After every successful payment are sent after each successful payment, including the first.
Perks set to Once on initial membership purchase are sent once, when the member joins.
Perks set to On a recurring schedule aren’t affected.
New stores have this on. Stores that installed the app earlier keep the first-perk-only behavior until they turn it on.
Before you turn it on, remove any email discount perks you no longer want members to receive, such as an expired code.
Fulfillment Settings
Use these options to retry failed payments automatically and to mark membership orders as fulfilled.
Option | What it does | Default for new stores |
Auto-retry failed payments when payment method is updated | If a member adds or updates a payment method after a failed billing attempt, Appstle retries the payment right away. | Off |
Automatically fulfill membership product | Marks the membership product as fulfilled in Shopify when a membership is created and when a renewal is paid. Only the membership product’s line items are fulfilled. Shopify doesn’t email the customer a fulfillment notice. | Off |
Fulfillment Status | Appears once auto-fulfillment is on, and lets you pick the fulfillment statuses to include: Open, In Progress, Incomplete or On Hold. Today Appstle fulfills only orders whose fulfillment status is Open or In Progress, whatever you pick here. To include other statuses, contact support. | Open and In Progress |
Automatic fulfillment is included only on some plans. If yours doesn’t include it, the option is greyed out and the card names the plan to upgrade to. See Compare Appstle Memberships pricing plans.
Tag Settings
Appstle tags each member order, so you can filter orders in Shopify or trigger a flow. First Time Order Tag goes on the order a member pays when they join. Recurring Order Tag goes on every renewal order. These tags are added to the order tag you set on the plan itself.
Keep each tag between 1 and 40 characters, and separate several tags with commas. To add a variable, pick it from Insert variable.... The preview under the field shows the tag with sample values. Leave a field empty if you don’t want that tag. New stores start with appstle_membership_first_order and appstle_membership_recurring_order.
You can use these variables:
{{ customer.id }}: the Shopify customer ID.
{{ subscriptionContract.id }}: the membership’s ID.
{{ firstOrder.id }}: the ID of the member’s first order.
{{ subscriptionContract.sellingPlanIds }}: the plan’s ID.
{{ subscriptionContract.sellingPlanNames }}: the plan’s name.
{{ subscriptionContract.variantIds }}: the membership product variant’s ID.
{{ subscriptionContract.variantNames }}: the membership product variant’s name.
Appstle Membership Metafields
This card is a read-only list of the membership data Appstle saves to Shopify metafields under the namespace appstle_membership. Use it when you build a Shopify Flow, a Klaviyo flow or another integration that needs membership data. On orders, details holds the order’s membership details as JSON. On customers, setting holds the trial and dunning tags, and subscriptions lists the customer’s memberships.
Account Ownership Settings
This card controls who can export member data and get the API key. Only the account owner can change it.
By default, the account owner and staff with Full access in Shopify can export member data and get the API key. To give other staff the same access:
Authorize All Staff Members: gives every staff member access. While it’s ticked, the user ID field is hidden.
Allow Export To Escalated User IDs: gives access only to the staff whose user IDs you list. To find a user ID, open the staff member under Settings → Users in Shopify and copy the number at the end of the page address.
Allowed Email Addresses For Notifications lists the only addresses you can choose when you export data, send a test email or set the admin notification email. Appstle also sends account notices to them, such as a warning when too many emails bounce. New stores start with the store’s contact email. You can add up to 10.
Things to know
Three options work through the Appstle Memberships app embed in your theme: Display message for non-members, Disable Banner Message for members and Allow membership perks during trial. Make sure the app embed is on, or they have no effect on your storefront. See Get Started: Install Appstle℠ Memberships on Shopify.
Troubleshooting
If something doesn’t work as you expect, start here.
What you see | What to check |
The page won’t save | Check that Public Domain, Money Format, Currency Code and Member Portal Url all have a value, and that Allowed Email Addresses For Notifications has no more than 10 addresses. |
The member portal doesn’t load | Member Portal Url must match the address Shopify gives the app. If it was changed, contact support to check it. See Member Portal (for customers) - Overview. |
A member kept perks after cancelling | This is the default: perks end with the paid period. Turn on Immediately revoke customer perks on membership cancellation to remove them at once. |
A member changed plan but wasn’t charged | Check Immediately charge/refund members on membership upgrade/downgrade and Schedule membership downgrades to end of billing cycle. The change may be scheduled for the next billing date. |
A membership can’t be paused, cancelled or changed | A plan change is scheduled for it. Open the membership and click Cancel Upgrade or Cancel Downgrade in the banner at the top, then try again. |
The non-member banner doesn’t show | It shows only to shoppers who aren’t logged in, and only while the app embed is on. A shopper who closed it doesn’t see it again during that visit. |
Member portal links in emails use an old domain | Update Public Domain to your store’s current domain. |
A new membership was cancelled by itself | Check Allow membership per customer. Appstle cancels a new membership when the customer already has one that the chosen rule doesn’t allow. |
Members get only one discount email | Turn on Send every email discount perk in a membership plan if the plan has more than one email discount perk. |
The auto-fulfill option is greyed out | Your plan doesn’t include it. See Compare Appstle Memberships pricing plans. |
A membership order wasn’t fulfilled automatically | Appstle fulfills only the membership product, and only when its fulfillment status is Open or In Progress. The membership’s activity log shows why an order was skipped. |
I can’t send a test email or an export to an address | Ask the account owner to add the address to Allowed Email Addresses For Notifications. |
I can’t change Account Ownership Settings | Only the account owner can change them. |
