Subscriptions - Plan Types

Choose how customers pay: Pay as you go, Prepaid auto renew, Prepaid one time, or Prepaid separate orders — and which types support free trials.

Overview

When you create a subscription plan, open a subscription option and choose how customers pay under Billing & frequency. Appstle offers four billing types:

  • Pay as you go

  • Prepaid, auto renew

  • Prepaid, one time

  • Prepaid, separate orders

Here's what that looks like:

How customers pay — four billing type cards. Pay as you go is selected, with the How it works panel on the right.

Selecting a card updates the How it works panel. Labels match the UI exactly (sentence case, with commas).

Pay as you go

  • Customers pay for each delivery when its order is created.

  • Every delivery is its own Shopify order.

  • The plan renews until the customer cancels.

Free trials are available on Pay as you go.

Prepaid, auto renew

  • Customers pay once, upfront, for several deliveries.

  • One Shopify order is created and shipped in parts.

  • After the last delivery, they're charged again for the next set.

Here's what that looks like:

Prepaid, auto renew selected, with billing frequency and How it works.

Free trials are available on Prepaid, auto renew.

Prepaid, one time

  • Customers pay once, upfront, for several deliveries.

  • One Shopify order is created and shipped in parts.

  • The plan ends after the last delivery — no more charges.

Here's what that looks like:

Prepaid, one time selected, including the optional Sell as a gift checkbox.

Trials aren't available for Prepaid, one time. The Trial tab is greyed out. Hover tip: a trial would only discount the single payment and could give the deliveries away — use a discount instead.

Here's what that looks like:

Prepaid, separate orders

  • Customers pay once, upfront, for several deliveries.

  • Each later delivery gets its own $0 Shopify order.

  • When the deliveries run out, they're charged again.

Here's what that looks like:

Prepaid, separate orders selected, with the pricing warning and How it works panel.

Price the product for all deliveries in a charged order (not just one). You can't change an option to or from separate orders after it's saved.

Trials aren't available for Prepaid, separate orders. The Trial tab shows a blocked state.

Here's what that looks like:
