Appstle Memberships uses Shopify's subscription system, so Shopify's subscription rules apply to every membership you sell. This article covers which payment gateways you can use, which payment methods work and where you can sell memberships. Shopify can change these rules, so check Shopify's subscription considerations page for the current list.
Payment gateways
To sell memberships, your store must use one of these payment gateways:
Gateway | What to know |
Shopify Payments | Can update saved cards automatically when customers get new ones, which reduces failed payments. Customers can check out with Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal, though some stores offer only Shop Pay. For memberships, Apple Pay works only with Visa and Mastercard. |
PayPal Express | Customers can pay with PayPal. Third-party transaction fees apply if Shopify Payments isn't active on your store. |
Authorize.net | PayPal is the only wallet option. Google Pay and Apple Pay aren't supported. |
Adyen | Available only to businesses that Adyen has already approved. Not every Adyen payment method supports recurring billing. |
Stripe | Available only to select merchants. |
Which gateways you can use depends on your region and on each gateway's terms of service.
Payment methods
Customers need a payment method that supports recurring billing. Local, manual and other non-credit-card payment methods, such as cash on delivery or bank deposit, may not work for memberships.
With a gateway other than Shopify Payments, customers may need to update their payment details themselves when they get a new card, so their membership payments keep going through. Ask your gateway whether it can receive updated card details automatically.
Sales channels
Shopify supports subscriptions only on your online store, Shopify POS, the Shop app and custom storefronts, so you can't sell memberships on other sales channels. Selling memberships on Shopify POS also requires Shopify Payments.
