Creating a Product Redemption Point System with Appstle Subscriptions and Loyalty Lion

Introduction

The primary use case some merchants might want is a credit system where the subscription gives them credits every billing cycle (like a monthly credit for being a member) for product redemption for later use. This example allows for the use of Loyalty Lion to keep track of the credits and then allow for redemption for one type of product(e.g. an ice cream item with different flavors or a bag with different colors). Appstle Subscription is responsible for the recurring billing of the customers. This use case works on the assumption that only one product type is used and all variants are the same price. This process would cost $5/month from a Loyalty Lion enhancement on their free plan for the reward rule.

Main Implementation Flow

  1. Appstle Subscription

    1. Charges billing and create an order on Shopify

    2. Order Creation automatically notifies Loyalty Lion

  2. Loyalty Lion

    1. Adds points to the Customer Account

    2. Customer redeems points and gets a redemption code

    3. Full-price discount is used when checking out.

Setup Sumarry

After installing both Appstle Subscriptions and Loyalty Lion, the bare minimum for setup for each application and the Shopify store is as follows (assuming the store has been established in Shopify).

Shopify Store:

  1. A product for use as a membership product (this is the same as making a digital product named “Membership” and this will be used to attach to the Appstle Subscription selling plan)

  2. Desired redeemed product variations to be in a collection (we also need the collection ID)

Appstle Subscription:

  1. An established subscription plan (with the “Membership” product attached

  2. Loyalty Lion API Keys (more information below)

Loyalty Lion:

  1. All earning rules removed

  2. Award rule added for a fixed discount off a collection (the collection here would be the collection made to contain the product variants)

Shopify Admin Setup

Membership Product:

The first step is to create a Membership product and a Product for redemption on your Shopify Panel to attach it to Appstle Subscriptions later as shown below. This is also where you will set the cost of your membership.

Make sure to set the purchase options to the following to remove any one time purchases of a membership.

Add redemption product to collection:

Afterwards, create a collection and add you products to redeem to it. Make sure to note the highlighted collection ID in the URL address. This number will be used later for the Loyalty Lion process. Please note that all of the products added here should be all the same price.

Appstle Subscription Setup

Create a Subscription plan and attach the Membership Product:

Create a plan according to your desired billing cycle and attach only the membership product(s) to the plan:

Integrate Loyalty Lion API

The Loyalty Lion integration needs two keys, the token and secret key. You can find these in the Loyalty Lion settings (Manage > Settings) as shown below.

After obtaining this key, you can integrate Appstle Subscriptions to Loyalty Lion by going to Support > App Integrations. Select Loyalty Lion to add the two keys.

Select enable and then put in how many points you want to give for each subscription order (both initial orders and renewals will give the same number of points). In this example we choose to give 2 points for each subscription order.

The amount of points you choose depends on how much the points are worth for redemption. In this case, 1 point redeems for 1 product as you’ll see in the Loyalty Lion setup. The multiplier part will be ignored since we are setting a fixed amount of points per order.

Loyalty Lion Setup

Disable all earning rules

In order to ensure that credits are only awarded to membership subscribers, disable all earning rules in Loyalty Lion (Manage > View rules).

Create an Award Rule for a fixed discount off the Product

Create a new reward for fixed discount off a collection (Manage > Create new reward). You will set the price to be equal to the cost of the redeemed product (in this case it is $10 off a $10 product). Make sure the minimum spend is set to $0. Set the point cost to be however many points are needed for a free product (in this example 1 point gives 1 free product). Lastly, add the collection ID and name the reward.

Customer Flow

After completing the setup, the customer flow is as follows:

  1. Customer creates a store account (depends on your theme and store setup)

  2. Customer buys a membership

  1. Points are added to the customer membership account

  1. Customer can redeem the points for free products

  2. The customer receives a code for use at checkout which gives the product for free.

3. Customer Checkout (customer manually inputs code)

Customizations

To enable redemption of multiple prices, you can also add a second reward rule and create a new collection depending on how you are doing your program. Please note that the maintenance of what products are in the collection is all dependent on the Shopify store administrator as the apps to do not automatically create collections or manage the products.

Upgrades

This process is the cheapest way to implement this, but for a more seamless checkout Loyalty Lion offers more options with their more expensive plans. This includes upgrades such as buy with points which will apply the codes directly to the checkout as opposed to the customer having to put the code in themselves. Please check the Loyalty Lion page for the most current plan pricing.

Summary

In summary, this method needs the store setup to be ready and the steps above followed for the Shopify Admin, Appstle Subscriptions, and Loyalty Lion. The main things to remember are as follows:

  1. All redeemed products must be the same price

  2. All redeemable products must be in one collection

  3. The amount of point rewarded is determined in the Appstle Subscriptions panel

  4. Enable Loyalty Lion integration in the Appstle Subscriptions settings

  5. All other reward rules must be removed in Loyalty Lion

  6. The reward rule for fixed discount off a collection must be made
