What are ways to earn?

Learn what ways to earn are, how to add and manage them, and which ones you can offer.

A way to earn is something customers do to collect points or store credit, such as placing an order, creating an account or following you on Instagram.

You choose which ways to earn to offer and how much each one gives. Customers then spend their points on the rewards you set up in Ways to redeem.

Customers see your ways to earn in the loyalty popup and on the loyalty page, in the order you set.

Decide what a point is worth

Before you set amounts, decide how much a point is worth. Then set what customers earn and what rewards cost to match.

For example, customers earn 10 points for every $1 they spend, and a $5 reward costs 1,000 points. A customer who spends $100 earns 1,000 points, which is $5 back, or 5%.

The Ways to earn page

In the Appstle Loyalty app, click Ways to earn to manage your ways to earn. The page has three cards:

Card

What it does

What customers see

Shows the loyalty popup with your ways to earn. Click Customize to open the Points program editor and see each change before you save.

Your ways to earn

Lists your ways to earn with a short summary of each, for example 3 points per $1 spent. Here you pause, reorder, edit and add them.

Rules for every way to earn

Shows Points arrive, Refunds and Points expire. These apply to all your ways to earn. Click Change in the editor to change them.

At the top right, Export emails you a file of every point and store credit your ways to earn gave, and View tutorials opens help articles.

Export works for the store owner, staff with full access and staff allowed in More → Advanced Settings. The file goes to an email address listed there.

To see totals for each way to earn, click the columns button next to Add a way to earn (Edit columns), select Earned and Points given (Given if you give store credit), then click Done.

Add a way to earn

  1. In the Appstle Loyalty app, click Ways to earn, then click Add a way to earn. The Points program editor opens on the gallery.

  2. Search for a way to earn, or pick a category on the left.

  3. Click the way to earn you want, then click Add way to earn. The editor opens its settings.

  4. Set it up, then click Save at the top right of the editor.

A way to earn you can have only once shows Added in the gallery after you add it. Clicking it opens the one you have.

To read about a way to earn first, select it and click Learn about at the bottom of the gallery.

Display-only card, a card customers see that gives no points by itself, and Referral card, which shows your referral program among the ways to earn. You can have one Referral card.

Manage a way to earn

In Your ways to earn, use the switch to pause a way to earn or turn it back on, and drag a row to change the order customers see. Both save right away.

A badge beside the switch shows Starts and a date, Ended or POS only. Ways to earn with one of these badges don't show on your online store.

Hover over a row to show its buttons, then hover over a button to see its name. On a narrow screen, the buttons always show under the row.

  • Edit opens the way to earn in the editor. Clicking its name does the same.

  • Duplicate adds a paused copy named Copy of and the original name, so you can change it before customers see it. Ways to earn you can have only once don't have this button.

  • View earned points lists the points customers earned from it. Display-only cards and the Referral card don't have this button.

  • Delete removes it once you confirm. Customers can no longer earn this way, and what they already earned stays.

Things to know

  • Turn on the Appstle Loyalty app embed in your theme. While it's off, the loyalty popup doesn't show on your store, and online store orders don't earn points (POS orders still do). See Set up your loyalty program.

  • Changes in the editor reach your store when you click Save. If the update to your storefront doesn't finish, the page shows a message with a Retry button.

  • If you limit a way to earn to certain customer tags, only signed-in customers with one of those tags see it. Customers with a tag you exclude don't see it.

  • Store credit and schedules need a plan that includes them. Without it, you can't turn a paused way to earn that gives store credit back on, and Duplicate shows Needs a higher plan for one that uses either.

  • For the Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube and Pinterest ways to earn, customers get points when they click the button. The networks don't tell the app whether they actually followed, liked or shared.

  • Points per order, Leave a review and Review with HelpfulCrowd are no longer in the gallery, and Points for subscription orders shows there only if you already have one. Ones you already have stay in your list. For subscription orders, Points for purchases can count them too.

Troubleshooting

  • The popup doesn't show at all: turn on the Appstle Loyalty app embed in your theme.

  • A way to earn doesn't show in the popup: check that you saved it, that its switch is on and that it has no Starts, Ended or POS only badge. For tag limits, test signed in as a customer with one of those tags.

  • Customers don't get points for an order: open More → Activity Logs and find the order. See Give points for purchases for the usual reasons.

  • Reviews don't earn points: open the review way to earn in the editor and finish the steps it shows for your review app.
