Let customers redeem points for free shipping

Add a Free shipping reward so customers can spend points on free shipping, up to a shipping rate you choose. Set the points, the limit, a minimum order, the code, combinations and who can redeem.

A Free shipping reward lets customers spend points on free shipping, up to a shipping rate you choose. For example, customers spend 400 points for free shipping on any rate up to $20. Customers get a discount code they apply at checkout.

You manage it on the Ways to redeem page with your other rewards. See What are ways to redeem?

Add a Free shipping reward

  1. In the Appstle Loyalty app, click Ways to redeem, then click Add a reward. The Points program editor opens on the gallery.

  2. Click Shipping, then click Free shipping.

  3. Click Add reward. The editor opens its settings.

  4. Go through the six steps below, then click Save at the top right of the editor. The reward is active, so customers see it as soon as you save.

You can add as many Free shipping rewards as you like, for example 200 points for rates up to $10 and 400 points for rates up to $25.

The six steps

The panel on the right shows a summary of each step. Click a step to change it.

Step

What you set

Reward

How many points the reward costs, and the highest shipping rate it covers.

Applies to

A minimum order, and one-time or subscription purchases.

Reward code

A code prefix, how often a code works, when it expires and when it starts working.

Combinations

Which other discounts customers can use in the same order.

Who can redeem

Customer tags, individual customers and how often a customer can redeem.

What customers see

The name, description and icon, and the text customers see after redeeming.

Use the Active switch at the top of the panel to pause the reward or turn it back on. While it's paused, the switch reads Paused, and customers stop seeing the reward once you save. Codes they already have keep working.

Reward

  • Customers spend: the points the reward costs. At 0, customers redeem it without spending points.

  • Free shipping on rates up to: the highest shipping rate the reward covers. It must be more than 0. A rate at or below it becomes free. A rate above it stays full price, so with a $20 limit a $12 rate is free and a $25 rate costs $25. If you sell in other currencies, the limit is converted to the customer's currency at checkout.

Applies to

  • Minimum order: choose No minimum, or choose Minimum order and enter the amount in Orders over.

  • Purchase type: choose One-time, Subscriptions or Both. Subscriptions need a subscription app on your store. If you can't choose them after adding one, click Sync Shop Details in More → Advanced Settings.

Reward code

Each code comes from one Shopify discount for this reward, titled with the reward's Name. Click View in Shopify at the bottom of this step to open it. If an older reward has no View in Shopify link, the app creates its Shopify discount the next time you change and save the reward.

  • Start codes with your own prefix: turn it on and enter a Prefix. Without one, codes use the Discount Prefix in More → Advanced Settings, or AL_ if that's empty. The editor shows an example code.

  • Each code works: each customer gets their own code. Choose Once, or More than once and enter how many Times the customer can use it (2 or more). If the reward applies to subscriptions, this is also how many subscription payments get free shipping.

  • One use per customer: on by default. The customer uses the code on one order, then redeems again for a new one. If you choose More than once, turn it off: while it's on, each code still works on one order only. With Once, leave it on, because the editor needs at least one limit.

  • Code expiry (under More options): choose Use the store setting, Never expire or Expire after and enter a length of time. Expiry counts from when the code starts working. Never expire and Expire after need a higher plan. To change the store setting, click Change in Settings. See Set up reward code expiration.

  • Code starts working after (under More options): the number of days in your store's time zone. 0 means right away. Codes redeemed at checkout always work right away.

Combinations

Choose which discounts customers can use in the same order as this reward's code. Both boxes are unchecked for a new reward.

Option

Lets the code combine with

Product discounts

Discounts that take an amount off products.

Order discounts

Discounts that take an amount off the whole order.

There's no Shipping discounts option, because Shopify doesn't combine two shipping discounts. Shopify combines two discounts only when both allow it, so the other discount must allow combining too.

Who can redeem

  • Only customers with these tags: leave it empty for everyone. Otherwise only signed-in customers with at least one of the tags see the reward and can redeem it.

  • Limit how often a customer redeems this: turn it on, enter a number of times and choose a period. With per day, it counts today in your store's time zone. With per week, per month or per year, it counts the last 7, 30 or 365 days. A customer over the limit gets a message when they click Redeem.

  • Not customers with these tags and These customers can't redeem it (under More options): those customers don't see the reward and can't redeem it.

The three tag and customer settings need a higher plan. If yours doesn't include them, the editor tells you.

If an older Free shipping reward was limited to certain countries, Only in these countries (under More options) lists them. You can't change the list, and the text under it says whether codes still check it. The first time you change and save such a reward, the app creates its Shopify discount, and codes redeemed after that work in every country.

Free shipping has no Where it works step. Customers redeem it online and use the code at checkout.

What customers see

In the What customers see step, set the Name, Description and Icon. Customers see them in the loyalty popup under Redeem Rewards, on your loyalty page, and in the loyalty checkout block if you've added it. Signed-in customers with enough points get a Redeem button.

The Description can use {{points}} and {{max_shipping_amount}}, which fill in from the Reward step. The default doesn't mention the limit, so add it to tell customers before they redeem, for example: "Use {{points}} points for free shipping up to {{max_shipping_amount}}." If you set a minimum order, type the amount yourself, because {{min_spend_amount}} shows nothing here.

The Name can't use placeholders, so if it mentions the limit, update it yourself when you change the limit. It's also the title of the Shopify discount.

After a customer clicks Redeem, the popup shows their new code under Your Rewards. The customer can copy the code or click Apply Code. A note tells them the discount is applied at checkout, so the cart may show the full price.

The code's title is the text you set in After redeeming, customers see. It can use {{max_shipping_amount}}, and {{min_spend_amount}} when you set a minimum order. The same text appears in the customer's points history, and as an on-site message when nudges are on.

The Return points link shows when you let customers return unused rewards. See Let customers return unused rewards for their points.

Things to know

  • Turn on the Appstle Loyalty app embed in your theme. While it's off, the loyalty popup doesn't show. See Set up your loyalty program.

  • Changes in the editor reach your store when you click Save.

  • Changes to Each code works and Code expiry apply to codes redeemed after you save. Codes customers already have keep their old limit and expiry date.

  • A code works only for the customer who redeemed it. If someone else uses it, shipping isn't free. Ask customers to sign in to their account before they check out: as a guest, shipping may not be free.

  • Don't delete the reward's discount in Shopify. Customers can't redeem the reward without it. If it happens, see Troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting

  • Customers don't see the reward: check that you clicked Save and that its Active switch is on. If it's limited to customer tags, test signed in as a customer with one of them.

  • There's no Redeem button: the customer isn't signed in, or doesn't have enough points. Pending points don't count.

  • A customer gets a message instead of a code: they reached Limit how often a customer redeems this, or a store-wide rule in the editor's Settings stops them: Before customers can redeem, Redemption limits or Pause points during a sale.

  • The code doesn't make shipping free: check that the shipping rate is at or below Free shipping on rates up to, and that the customer who redeemed the code is signed in at checkout. Also check the minimum order, the purchase type (a subscription in the cart needs Subscriptions or Both), and whether the code has started working, expired or already been used.

  • The code doesn't work with another discount: check the matching box under Combinations. The other discount must allow combining too.

  • "Shopify didn't accept this reward's discount": your settings are saved, but codes may not work as set. The message shows what Shopify said. Click Try again, or click Save if you've made changes since.

  • "This reward's Shopify discount was deleted": customers can't redeem the reward, and codes they already have don't work. Click Recreate the discount to create a new Shopify discount that includes their unused codes, so those codes work again. Or click Refund unused codes to cancel those codes and give customers back the points they spent. Customers aren't emailed. Both happen as soon as you confirm, not when you save.

  • You can't choose Subscriptions, tags or a code expiry: for subscriptions, click Sync Shop Details in More → Advanced Settings after adding a subscription app. For the others, your plan doesn't include the setting, and the editor tells you.
