Give points for purchases

Give customers points or store credit when they order, per $1 they spend or a fixed amount per order.

Points for purchases is the most common way to earn. Customers get points or store credit when they place an order. You choose whether they earn per $1 they spend or a fixed amount per order, which orders count, who can earn and when the points arrive.

Store credit and schedules need a plan that includes them. The editor tells you when an option needs a higher plan.

Before you start

  • Turn on the Appstle Loyalty app embed in your theme. While it's off, only POS orders earn points: online store orders and subscription renewals earn nothing. See Set up your loyalty program.

  • If Your ways to earn already lists Product Purchase, that's your Points for purchases way to earn: the first-time setup added it, counted per $1 spent. Edit it instead of adding a second one.

Add Points for purchases

  1. In the Appstle Loyalty app, click Ways to earn, then click Add a way to earn.

  2. Choose Points for purchases, then click Add way to earn. The Points program editor opens on the new way to earn.

  3. Go through the seven steps below. The button at the bottom of each step takes you to the next one (for example Next: Orders that count), and All steps jumps to any step.

  4. Click Save at the top right of the editor.

The sentence at the top of the panel sums up what you set, for example Customers earn 3 points for every $1 they spend. A $50 order earns 150 points. Tax and shipping don't count. Use the Active switch to pause the way to earn.

The preview in the editor shows the way to earn as customers see it. Use Preview as in the toolbar to check it as a Guest, a Member or a VIP member.

Step 1: Reward

These settings decide how much customers earn:

Setting

What it does

Customers get

Choose Points or Store credit.

How points are counted

Per $1 spent gives the amount you set for every $1 of the order. Per order gives the same amount for every order.

Points

The amount customers earn. With store credit the field is called Store credit, and counted per $1 spent it's a percentage back.

Most points per order

Under More options, for Per $1 spent only. Caps what one order can earn. Leave it empty for no limit. With store credit it's called Most store credit per order.

Step 2: Orders that count

These settings decide which orders and items earn. With Per order, only Minimum order, the subscription switches, the sale and discount switches and the order tag settings show:

Setting

What it does

Minimum order

Orders with a lower total earn nothing. The total is after discounts, with tax and shipping. Leave it empty for no minimum.

Count tax

On: tax counts toward points. Off: tax never counts, even when your prices include it.

Count shipping

Adds the order's shipping to what counts.

Orders

All orders, One-time or Subscriptions. With One-time, items bought on a subscription earn nothing. With Subscriptions, only items bought on a subscription earn.

Give points on the initial subscription order and Give points on recurring subscription orders

Show when Orders isn't One-time. At least one of the two must stay on.

No points on sale items

Items whose compare-at price is above their price earn nothing. Counting per order: if any item is on sale, the order earns nothing.

No points on discounted items

Items with any discount, from a code or an automatic discount, earn nothing. Counting per order: if any item has a discount, the order earns nothing.

Leave out products

Pick products or single variants that earn nothing from this way to earn.

Only products with these tags and Not products with these tags

Under More options. Only products with at least one of the first tags earn, and products with any of the second tags earn nothing. Leave Only products with these tags empty to include every product.

Only orders with these tags and Not orders with these tags

Under More options. The same rule for order tags. While any way to earn uses order tags, every order waits about 15 minutes before it earns, so other apps can tag it first.

Step 3: Who can earn

These settings decide which customers earn:

Setting

What it does

Only customers with these tags

Leave it empty to include everyone. Otherwise only customers with at least one of these tags see the way to earn and earn from it. Tags match without regard to case.

Not customers with these tags

Customers with any of these tags don't see it and don't earn from it.

Guests earn too

Customers who check out without an account also get points. If your store uses new customer accounts, or Enable Auto-Activation for Customers is on in More → Advanced Settings, this applies only to customers you set to inactive. With new customer accounts, the switch shows only if it's already on.

Where it works

Online store and POS, Online store or POS. With POS only, customers don't see the way to earn in the popup or on the loyalty page. If none is selected, no orders earn from it.

Step 4: How often

Turn on Limit how often a customer earns this to cap how many orders earn points for each customer. Set the number of times and the period: per day, per week, per month, per year or in total.

Periods are rolling and counted in UTC: a day covers today and yesterday, a week the last 8 days, a month the last 31 days and a year the last 366 days.

Step 5: When points arrive

Choose when the points are added to the customer's balance:

  • Right away: points arrive as soon as the order counts (see below).

  • After a waiting period: points show as pending in the customer's history, then arrive after the number of days you set, counted from the order date. Useful to cover returns.

  • After you approve them: points stay pending until you approve them in Customers → Approve Pending Transactions.

Under the choices, the editor shows when orders count, for example Orders earn as soon as they're placed. This one setting applies to every way to earn for orders.

Click Change in Settings to make orders wait until they're paid or fulfilled. Their points stay pending until then, even after a waiting period ends.

Step 6: Schedule

Choose when the way to earn runs:

  • Always on: it runs until you pause it.

  • Between dates: set Starts and Ends, or leave Ends empty for no end date. Dates start at 12:00 AM and end at 11:59 PM in your store's time zone, and orders count by the time they were placed. Outside the dates, customers don't see the way to earn and can't earn it.

Under More options, Only on some days each month limits it to the weeks of the month and days of the week you pick. The 1st week is days 1 to 7, and leaving either empty matches them all.

On other days, customers still see the way to earn but don't earn from it. Schedules need a plan that includes them.

Step 7: What customers see

These settings change how the way to earn looks in the popup and on the loyalty page. The editor edits one language at a time: change the language in the toolbar. The icon, the button link and the refund message are the same in every language.

Setting

What it does

Name

The title in the popup and on the loyalty page.

Description

Shown under the name. Use Insert a placeholder to add {{points}} ({{credits}} with store credit) for the reward and {{amount}} for the spend amount. Bold, italic, underline, lists, line breaks and links work.

Icon

A built-in icon or your own image. Square images look best.

Button link

Adds a Claim button that opens this page, for example a collection. Leave it empty for no button. Change the button's text in Design.

Message when points arrive

Shown in the customer's points history when they earn this way. {{points}} is the amount earned and {{rule_name}} is the name, for example 150 points added for Product Purchase. Customers always see it in your default language.

Message after a refund

Shown in the customer's points history when points are taken back after a refund.

Things to know

  • When several Points for purchases ways to earn apply, customers don't earn from all of them. Counted Per $1 spent, each item earns from the one with the highest Points. Counted Per order, the order earns from the one with the highest Points. These do add up: one counted Per $1 spent plus one counted Per order, and one that gives points plus one that gives store credit.

  • To give a VIP tier a higher rate, add another Points for purchases way to earn with more Points and enter the tier's tag in Only customers with these tags (the editor suggests your tier tags). Customers in that tier earn the higher rate; everyone else keeps the first rate.

  • Other order ways to earn, such as Points for subscription orders, Buy specific products and Buy from a collection, give their points on top of Points for purchases.

  • Points come off a refunded order only when Take points back when an order is refunded is on in the editor's Settings → Refunds. Points still pending are cancelled instead. Refund the items in Shopify, not only an amount, so the right points come off.

  • Customers can earn part of a point, such as 12.5 points. To round each order's points, use Round points customers earn in Settings → Rounding.

  • To see who earned points from a way to earn, open the row's menu on the Ways to earn page and click View earned points.

Troubleshooting

  • No orders earn points: check that the Appstle Loyalty app embed is on (without it, only POS orders earn), that the way to earn is Active and inside its dates, and that Pause points during a sale is off in the editor's Settings → During a sale.

  • One order earned no points: open More → Activity Logs and find the order; the log gives the reason. Common ones are the Minimum order, a tag setting, the earn limit, Where it works, a guest checkout while Guests earn too is off, or No points on orders paid with store credit or No points on draft orders in Settings → Store credit and draft orders.

  • An order earned fewer points than expected: discounts come off before points are counted, tax and shipping count only when Count tax and Count shipping are on, and Most points per order caps the total. If several Points for purchases ways to earn apply, each item earns from only the highest one.

  • Points show as pending: your store makes orders wait until they're paid or fulfilled and this one isn't yet (see Change in Settings in Step 5), or Step 5 is set to a waiting period or to your approval.

  • Customers earn twice for one order: two Points for purchases ways to earn both apply, one counted Per $1 spent and one Per order, or one giving points and one giving store credit. Another order way to earn can also add points. Pause the one you don't want.
