Give bonus points for products in a collection

Reward customers with bonus points or store credit for the products they buy from collections you choose.

With Buy from a collection, customers earn bonus points, or store credit, for the products they buy from collections you choose. Use it to promote a seasonal collection or to reward customers for shopping a line you want to grow.

You set it up in the Points program editor. The points come on top of what customers earn from Points for purchases on the same order.

Before you start

  • Turn on the Appstle Loyalty app embed in your theme. While it's off, only POS orders earn points. See Set up your loyalty program.

  • Have the collection in Shopify, with the products in it. Manual and automated collections both work: a product earns when it's in any collection you choose at the time the order comes in.

Set it up

  1. In the Appstle Loyalty app, click Ways to earn, then click Add a way to earn.

  2. Under Orders, choose Buy from a collection, then click Add way to earn. The Points program editor opens on the new way to earn, named Shop the collection.

  3. In Reward, set Customers get to Points or Store credit (store credit needs a plan that includes it). Under Customers earn for, choose what the amount applies to, then enter the amount.

  4. Under Collections, click Choose collections and tick the collections that earn. Click Add.

  5. Open Orders that count and set which orders earn.

  6. Go through the other steps, then click Save at the top right of the editor.

The sentence at the top of the panel sums up what you set, for example Customers earn 5 points for each different product from Single-Origin Coffees in an order. Use the Active switch to pause the way to earn.

Choose what customers earn for

Take an order with 2 Colombia Coffee at $20 each and 1 Ethiopia Coffee at $22, both in the collection, and an amount of 5. The three choices give different totals:

Customers earn for

What it does

This order earns

Each product

Each different product from the collection earns once, whatever the quantity. Two variants of a product, such as two sizes, count as two products.

10 points

Each item

Every item earns, so 3 of the same product earn 3 times.

15 points

Every $1 spent

The amount is paid for every $1 customers spend on products from the collection, after discounts. Shipping doesn't count. With store credit, the amount is credit per $1, so enter 0.05 to give 5 cents back on every $1.

310 points

Items that cost nothing after discounts earn nothing, whichever choice you make. If Round points customers earn in Settings is set to Round down or Round up, store credit is rounded to a whole amount too: with Round down, $0.80 of credit becomes $0.

Choose which orders count

The Orders that count step decides which items earn:

Setting

What it does

Orders

All orders, One-time or Subscriptions. With One-time, items bought on a subscription earn nothing. With Subscriptions, only items bought on a subscription earn, renewals included.

No points on sale items

Items whose compare-at price is above their price earn nothing.

No points on discounted items

Items with any discount earn nothing, from a code or an automatic discount.

Only orders with these tags and Not orders with these tags

Under More options. Limit the way to earn to orders with certain tags, or leave out orders that have them. Leave the first one empty to include every order.

This way to earn doesn't have a minimum order, tax or shipping settings, product tags or Guests earn too. The other steps work as they do for every order way to earn: see Give points for purchases for Who can earn, How often, When points arrive, Schedule and What customers see.

What customers see

  • Customers see this way to earn in the loyalty popup and on the loyalty page, with the Name and Description you set in What customers see. The card lists the collections you chose.

  • Each product that earns adds its own line to the customer's points history, with your Message when points arrive. If the message uses {{rule_name}}, customers see the name of the way to earn followed by the product and variant.

  • Customers don't have to do anything: the points arrive when the order counts.

Things to know

  • If a product is in the collections of more than one Buy from a collection way to earn, it earns from the one that pays the most for it, not from both.

  • Points from Buy from a collection add up with Points for purchases and other order ways to earn. To give these products their own rate instead of a bonus, add them to Leave out products on your Points for purchases way to earn. That setting shows when How points are counted is Per $1 spent.

  • Limit how often a customer earns this counts each different product or variant that earned, not each order and not the quantity. When an order comes in, the limit looks only at earlier orders: if the customer is under it, every product in the order earns. With 2 times per day, an order with two products from the collection uses up the day. See Give points for purchases for how periods are counted.

  • Points for refunded items come off as they do for any purchase. See Give points for purchases.

  • The popup and the loyalty page show this way to earn only while Show loyalty on your store is on in Design → Customize → Visibility. Points still arrive when it's off.

Troubleshooting

  • An order earned nothing from it: check that the product is in one of the chosen collections in Shopify, and that it cost more than nothing after discounts. Then check that the way to earn is Active and inside its dates, that Orders fits how the item was bought, that No points on sale items and No points on discounted items aren't leaving it out, that the customer and the order pass the tag settings, that Where it works includes the sales channel, and that Limit how often a customer earns this isn't blocking the customer.

  • A guest earned nothing: this way to earn has no Guests earn too setting, so it skips customers the app treats as guests. Those are customers you set to inactive yourself and, on stores with classic customer accounts, customers who check out without an account, unless auto-activation is on in More → Advanced settings.

  • Nothing earns, and Reward says "Choose what customers earn for": choose Each product, Each item or Every $1 spent, then click Save. Until you do, this way to earn gives nothing.

  • You can't tell why: open More → Activity Logs and find the order. The log says when no way to earn applied to a product, and when the earn limit was reached.

  • No order earns at all: check that the Appstle Loyalty app embed is on.

  • Customers earn more than the amount you set: that's expected. The amount is for each product, item or $1, and it adds to what Points for purchases gives for the same order.

  • The points are pending: look at When points arrive and at the order settings in Settings. See Give points for purchases.
