Give points for product reviews

Learn how to give customers points or store credit when they review a product in Judge.me, Loox, Stamped, Okendo and other review apps.

With a review way to earn, customers earn points or store credit when they review a product in your review app. A customer who reviews a product in Judge.me, for example, earns 10 points as soon as Judge.me tells Appstle Loyalty about the review.

Use it to get more reviews for your products and to thank the customers who write them. There is one way to earn for each review app, and you set them all up the same way.

Before you start

  • Set up your review app on your store and check that it collects reviews.

  • Customers must review with the same email address they use in your store. The review earns points only when that email matches a customer in the Appstle Loyalty app.

  • Decide how your review app will send its reviews to Appstle Loyalty. See Connect your review app below.

Set it up

  1. In the Appstle Loyalty app, click Ways to earn, then click Add a way to earn.

  2. In Reviews, choose your review app, for example Review with Judge.me, then click Add way to earn. The Points program editor opens on the new way to earn, named Leave a review.

  3. In Reward, set Customers get to Points or Store credit (store credit needs a plan that includes it), then enter the amount for each review.

  4. With Judge.me or Okendo, turn on the extra points for photos and videos if you want them, and enter how much each one adds.

  5. Connect your review app, as described below.

  6. Go through the other steps, then click Save at the top right of the editor.

The sentence at the top of the panel sums up what you set, for example Customers earn 10 points for each review. Use the Active switch to pause the way to earn.

Connect your review app

Reviews earn points only after your review app sends them to Appstle Loyalty. How that works depends on the review app, and the Reward step shows what to do for yours.

For Judge.me, click Connect Judge.me. If you have unsaved changes, click Save and connect. Judge.me opens in the same window, and when you come back, the label shows Connected. From then on, reviews earn points the moment they're posted. One connection covers all your Judge.me ways to earn, and Disconnect switches you back to email forwarding.

You can also forward Judge.me's review emails instead:

  1. In the Reward step, click Use email forwarding and copy Your review address.

  2. In your Shopify admin, open Judge.me.

  3. Go to General settings → Notifications.

  4. In Admin notification, paste your review address, then save.

This table shows how each review app sends its reviews:

The connection above, or email forwarding.

Stamped

Email forwarding. In Stamped, turn on review notification emails and send them to Your review address. The Open Stamped settings button in the Reward step takes you there.

Loox, Okendo, Air Reviews, Reviews.io and TrustShop

Shopify Flow, Shopify's free automation app. You set up a workflow once, and from then on reviews earn points. Click How to set it up in the Reward step, or follow the article for your app: Loox, Okendo, Air Reviews, Reviews.io, TrustShop.

Rivyo

Shopify Flow, with the Add Points action. The workflow sets what each review earns, in Points To Add (the template starts at 0, which earns nothing), and the message customers see, in Reason. The Reward, Who can earn and How often steps don't apply to Rivyo reviews. To stop Rivyo points, turn the workflow off. Follow the Rivyo article.

With Loox, Okendo, Air Reviews and TrustShop, add {{details}} to Message when points arrive in What customers see, for example "Thanks for your review. You earned {{points}} points: {{details}}". It adds the review's rating and product, which is how Appstle Loyalty tells one review from the next. New ways to earn don't include it, and without it each customer earns from this way to earn only once.

Settings for this way to earn

These settings are specific to review ways to earn:

Setting

What it does

Customers get and Points

Choose Points or Store credit, then enter what each review earns. Decimals work.

Extra points for a photo and Extra points for a video

Judge.me only. Each switch adds an amount once per review, the first time the review has a photo or a video. With store credit they read Extra store credit for a photo and Extra store credit for a video.

Extra points for a photo or video

Okendo, and older Judge.me ways to earn that still have it. Adds the amount when the review has a photo or a video. On Judge.me it stops, and goes away, once you turn on Extra points for a photo or Extra points for a video.

Email me each review that earns points

Enter your email address, and each time a forwarded review email earns points, the app sends you a copy. You don't get copies of reviews from the Judge.me connection or Shopify Flow. One address covers all your review ways to earn. Leave it empty to turn it off.

Show the product's name in the points history

Judge.me only, in What customers see. It's on unless you turn it off. Adds the reviewed product's name to the line in the customer's points history.

Button link

In What customers see. Adds a Review button that opens the page you enter, for example your reviews page. Leave it empty for no button.

Only customers with these tags and Not customers with these tags

In Who can earn. Limit the way to earn to customers with certain tags, or leave out customers who have them. Customers left out don't see it either. Leave the first one empty to include everyone.

Limit how often a customer earns this

In How often. Choose how many times in a period a customer can earn from it.

The other steps work as they do for every way to earn: see Give points for purchases for When points arrive, Schedule and the rest of What customers see.

What customers see

  • Customers see this way to earn in the loyalty popup and on the loyalty page, with the Name and Description you set in What customers see. By default the description reads "Earn 10 points for each review", with your number.

  • Each review that earns adds one line to the customer's points history, with your Message when points arrive. By default it reads "Thanks for your review. You earned 10 points". With Judge.me and Stamped, the reviewed product's name is added for you. With Loox, Okendo, Air Reviews and TrustShop, {{details}} adds the rating and the product, for example "5 stars for Ceramic Mug (1234567890)". Rivyo reviews show the workflow's Reason instead.

  • Customers don't have to do anything beyond writing the review.

Things to know

  • With Judge.me connected, each review earns once, and forwarded Judge.me emails are ignored. With Judge.me email forwarding, a customer earns once for each product they review.

  • With Reviews.io, each customer earns from this way to earn only once. Appstle Loyalty can't tell which product a Reviews.io review is for, so every review gets the same message, and later reviews count as already earned.

  • If more than one way to earn for the same review app applies, the customer earns from the one with the highest Points, not from both.

  • While Judge.me is connected, the app checks each review again over the next day. If the customer adds a photo or video in that time, they get the extra points then. Reviews that arrive by email aren't checked again.

  • Customers you've left out (Omitted or Omitted by customer on the Customers page) don't earn.

  • New review ways to earn don't have Guests earn too, so guests earn nothing from them. Some older ones still show it in Who can earn, and while it's on, guests earn from them too. If you turn it off, the setting goes away, and once you save you can't turn it back on.

  • If Round points customers earn in Settings is set to Round down or Round up, the total for each review is rounded once.

  • The popup and the loyalty page show this way to earn only while Show loyalty on your store is on in Design → Customize → Visibility. Points still arrive when it's off.

  • While the way to earn is paused, nobody earns from it. Schedule dates only hide it: outside them, customers don't see this way to earn, but their reviews still earn points.

Troubleshooting

  • A review earned nothing: check that your review app sends its reviews to Appstle Loyalty, as described in Connect your review app. Judge.me shows Connected in Reward, and a Flow workflow must be turned on in Shopify Flow (for Rivyo, with Points To Add above 0). Then check that the review's email matches a customer on the Customers page, that the way to earn is Active, that the customer passes the tag settings, and that Limit how often a customer earns this isn't blocking them.

  • Only a customer's first review earned: with Loox, Okendo, Air Reviews or TrustShop, Message when points arrive has no {{details}}. Add it, as described in Connect your review app. Reviews that earned nothing before that don't earn later. With Reviews.io, each customer earns only once (see Things to know).

  • The Judge.me label says Connecting, Needs attention or Disconnected: click Connect Judge.me again, and save your changes when the app asks. If it says no review has arrived in over 30 days and you've removed Judge.me's access, click Disconnect, then Connect Judge.me.

  • A guest earned nothing: this way to earn skips customers the app treats as guests, unless Guests earn too shows in Who can earn and is on. Guests are customers you set to inactive yourself and, on stores with classic customer accounts, customers who check out without an account, unless auto-activation is on in More → Advanced settings.

  • You can't tell why: open More → Activity Logs and find the failed entry for the review. "Customer not found with email" means the email doesn't match a customer. "No applicable earn rule found" means the tag settings or Limit how often a customer earns this left the customer out. "Already given" means the app counted it as a review that already earned.

  • The Activity Log has no entry for the review: the review didn't reach Appstle Loyalty, the customer is Omitted, or the way to earn is paused.

  • The points are pending: this way to earn's When points arrive is set to After a waiting period or After you approve them. Approve pending points on the Pending points page, or choose Right away.
