Give points for each item customers buy

Learn how to give customers points or store credit for every item in an order with the Points per item way to earn.

With Points per item, customers earn points, or store credit, for every item in their order. A customer who buys 3 items at 5 points each earns 15 points, whatever the items cost.

Use it to reward how many items customers buy rather than how much they spend. Used on its own, this way to earn keeps balances in round numbers, such as multiples of 5 or 10, so rewards priced at matching amounts come out even.

Before you start

  • Turn on the Appstle Loyalty app embed in your theme. While it's off, only POS orders earn points. See Set up your loyalty program.

  • Decide what happens to Points for purchases. If you keep it active, customers earn from both ways to earn, and the points add up. See Things to know below.

Set it up

  1. In the Appstle Loyalty app, click Ways to earn, then click Add a way to earn.

  2. Under Orders, choose Points per item, then click Add way to earn. The Points program editor opens on the new way to earn, named Points for every item.

  3. In Reward, set Customers get to Points or Store credit (store credit needs a plan that includes it), then enter the amount for each item.

  4. In Orders that count, set a minimum order, choose which kinds of orders earn, or leave out products, if you need to.

  5. Go through the other steps, then click Save at the top right of the editor.

The sentence at the top of the panel sums up what you set, for example Customers earn 5 points for each item they buy, with an example order. Use the Active switch to pause the way to earn.

Settings for this way to earn

These settings are specific to Points per item:

Setting

What it does

Customers get

Choose Points or Store credit. Store credit needs a plan that includes it.

Points

What each item earns. A customer who buys 2 of the same product earns it twice. With store credit the field is called Store credit.

Minimum order

Orders with a lower total earn nothing. The total is after discounts, with tax and shipping. Leave it empty for no minimum.

Orders

All orders, One-time or Subscriptions. With One-time, items bought on a subscription earn nothing. With Subscriptions, only items bought on a subscription earn, renewals included.

Leave out products

Products or single variants that earn nothing from this way to earn. Choosing a whole product leaves out all its variants.

Only products with these tags and Not products with these tags

Under More options. Limit the way to earn to products with certain tags, or leave out products that have them. Leave the first one empty to include every product.

Only orders with these tags and Not orders with these tags

Under More options. Limit the way to earn to orders with certain tags, or leave out orders that have them. Leave the first one empty to include every order.

Where it works

In Who can earn: Online store and POS, Online store or POS.

This way to earn has no tax or shipping settings, no sale or discount switches and no How often step. What a customer pays for an item doesn't change what it earns, so an item that's free after discounts still earns.

The other steps work as they do for every order way to earn: see Give points for purchases for Who can earn, When points arrive, Schedule and What customers see.

What customers see

  • Customers see this way to earn in the loyalty popup and on the loyalty page, with the Name and Description you set in What customers see. By default the description reads "Earn 5 points for each item you buy", with your number.

  • Each order that earns from this way to earn adds one line to the customer's points history, with your Message when points arrive. The line shows the total for the order, not each item.

  • Customers don't have to do anything: the points arrive when the order counts.

Things to know

  • Every item counts: the points are the amount you set times the quantity of each item in the order. An order with 2 of one product and 1 of another is 3 items.

  • Gift cards and free gifts count as items too. To stop gift cards from earning, add them to Leave out products.

  • If more than one Points per item way to earn applies to the same item, the item earns from the one with the highest Points, not from both.

  • Points per item adds up with Points for purchases and other order ways to earn. The Product Purchase way to earn that setup adds gives points for every $1 spent. To reward items only, pause it. If you keep both, customers earn for what they spend and for each item.

  • New Points per item ways to earn don't have Guests earn too, so guests earn nothing from them. Some older ones still show it in Who can earn, and while it's on, guests earn from them too. If you turn it off, the setting goes away, and once you save you can't turn it back on.

  • If Round points customers earn in Settings is set to Round down or Round up, the total for each order is rounded once, not each item.

  • Points for refunded items come off as they do for any purchase. See Give points for purchases.

  • The popup and the loyalty page show this way to earn only while Show loyalty on your store is on in Design → Customize → Visibility. Points still arrive when it's off.

  • While the way to earn is paused, nobody earns from it.

Troubleshooting

  • An order earned nothing from it: check that the way to earn is Active and inside its dates, that the order total reaches Minimum order, and that Orders fits how the item was bought. Then check that the item isn't in Leave out products or stopped by the product tag settings, that the customer and the order pass the tag settings, and that Where it works includes the sales channel.

  • A guest earned nothing: this way to earn skips customers the app treats as guests, unless Guests earn too shows in Who can earn and is on. Guests are customers you set to inactive yourself and, on stores with classic customer accounts, customers who check out without an account, unless auto-activation is on in More → Advanced settings.

  • You can't tell why: open More → Activity Logs and find the order. The log says when no way to earn applied to an item. It gives the reason for a left-out product, a product tag or the Orders choice. For anything else, go through the checks in the first item above.

  • No order earns at all: check that the Appstle Loyalty app embed is on.

  • Customers earn more than the amount you set: that's expected. The amount is for each item, and it adds to what Points for purchases gives for the same order.

  • The points are pending: look at When points arrive and at the order settings in Settings. See Give points for purchases.
