Set up a volume discount

Give shoppers a bigger discount the more they buy, like 10% off 2 items and 15% off 3.

A volume discount, also called quantity breaks or tiered pricing, gives shoppers a bigger discount the more of a product they buy, for example 10% off when they buy 2 and 15% off when they buy 3. Shoppers pick a tier from cards near the Add to cart button on your product page, and the discount applies at checkout. Use it to get shoppers to buy more of a product in one order.

Volume discounts are included on every Appstle Bundles plan. See a live example on the Appstle demo store.

Before you start

  • Make sure the products you want to discount are active. Draft products don't show on your store, so shoppers won't see the offer on them.

  • Turn on the Appstle Bundles app embed in your theme. Step 4 of the editor tells you whether it is on and links to the theme editor if it isn't.

Create a volume discount

  1. In your Shopify admin, open the Appstle Bundles app and go to Bundles & Discounts.

  2. Click Create offer.

  3. Under Buy more, select Volume discount. Use the On the store and At checkout tabs to preview what shoppers see.

  4. Click Start with Volume discount.

The editor opens with five steps on the left, a live preview in the middle and the settings for the current step on the right. Click Next at the bottom of the settings panel (for example Next: Discount tiers) to move on, or click a step on the left. Click Try it above the preview to click through the offer as a shopper would.

The offer isn't saved until you click Save as draft or Launch offer. The top right of the editor shows Not saved yet until you do.

Step 1: Products

Choose which products get the discount and which items count toward the same tier.

  1. Under Which products get the discount?, choose Specific products, Collections or All products.

  2. Click Add products, select the products or variants in Shopify's picker, then click Add. With Collections, click Add collections instead.

  3. Under Can shoppers mix items?, choose what counts toward a tier.

This table shows where each option applies the offer.

Option

What it does

Specific products

The offer shows on the products and variants you pick, up to 5,000.

Collections

The offer shows on every product in the collections you pick, up to 20 collections.

All products

The offer shows on every product in your store. Use Exclude products to leave some out.

This table shows which items add up toward a tier.

Setting

What counts together

No, the same variant only

Only matching items count together, like 3 bags of the same roast. This is the default.

Yes, variants of one product

Different variants of one product count together. Shoppers pick a variant for each item in the offer.

Yes, any product in this offer

Every product in the offer counts together, like 1 Decaf and 2 Dark Roast. Shoppers pick the other items in the offer.

With Yes, any product in this offer, you can also choose A product list (mix and match) under How shoppers pick the other items. For that setup, see the Mix and match volume discount article.

Under More options, Variants shoppers see first sets the variant each item starts with in each tier.

Step 2: Discount tiers

Tiers set how much shoppers save at each quantity.

  1. Under Shoppers get, choose % off or Amount off. If you switch between them, the editor converts each tier using the preview product's price, so check each tier afterwards. To give free items instead, like buy 2, get 1 free, choose Free items and follow the Buy X, get Y free article.

  2. With Amount off, choose How the amount comes off. Once for the whole tier takes the amount off once, shared by the items in the tier. From each line item takes it off every line, and each variant is its own line, so a tier filled with 2 colors saves twice.

  3. Optional: under Start from a popular setup, click Buy 2, save 15%, 10% and 15% off or 15% and 25% off. These buttons show only on a new offer with % off, until you change the tiers yourself.

  4. For each tier, enter the number of items shoppers buy under Buy and the discount under Save. A tier of 1 item at 0% is the regular price.

  5. Click Add a tier to add another tier. Drag a tier by its handle to reorder it, or open its ... menu for Tier settings, Duplicate and Delete. An offer needs at least one tier.

  6. Click the star on the tier that should be selected when the page opens. If no tier has a star, shoppers pick a tier themselves.

Buy quantities are whole numbers from 1 to 999, and a % off discount is from 0 to 100%. At checkout, a cart gets the tier that saves the most.

In a tier's Tier settings, you can give it its own Name at checkout or limit it with Only for customers with this tag.

Below the tiers, Grey out tiers that need more than is in stock is on by default. A tier that needs more items than the shopper's variant has in stock can't be picked and shows a badge. It works for products whose stock Shopify tracks and that stop selling at 0.

Click More options under it to change how tiers count and apply:

  • Count toward a tier by: Items bought (default) or Amount spent. Amounts are whole numbers.

  • Keep shoppers on the tier they picked: shoppers keep the discount of the tier they picked in the widget, even if they change the quantity in the cart.

  • Discount only items added through the widget: only items added through the offer get this discount. Items added to the cart any other way pay full price.

  • Count subscription and one-time items separately: each purchase type gets the tier its own count reaches, instead of all matching items counting toward one tier.

  • Remove bundle details when the discount stops applying: when a shopper lowers the quantity below the first discount tier, the cart items lose their bundle details.

  • Keep one tier selected at all times: shoppers can switch tiers but can't clear the selection by clicking the selected tier.

These switches are all off by default.

Further down, you can add gifts and add-ons and set purchase options:

  • Gifts that unlock as shoppers buy more: off by default. Turn it on to give free gifts or free shipping at higher tiers. See the Progressive gifts article.

  • Add-on products: off by default. Turn it on to offer products that shoppers can add to this offer at a discount.

  • Purchase options: under Purchase type, choose One-time and subscriptions (the default), One-time purchases only or Subscriptions only. Turn on Show purchase options in the offer to let shoppers choose one-time or subscribe inside the offer. Leave it off if your subscription app already shows its own options.

Step 3: Look and texts

Choose how the offer looks and what shoppers read.

  • Look: choose a starting look from Brand style, From your theme, Clean, Bold, Soft, Luxe or Playful. You can fine-tune any part afterwards.

  • Layout: Vertical stacks the tiers in one column, Horizontal puts them side by side, and Grid arranges them in a grid. You can also set the Corners and the Space between cards.

  • Option texts: under Name options as, choose 2 items, 2 pack, Set of 2 or Your own titles. With 2 items, set the Word for one and Word for more than one, like bottle and bottles.

  • For each tier, edit the Title, Subtitle, Savings badge, Badge and Badge style. Use {{saved_percentage}} in a subtitle and {{saved_amount}} in a savings badge to show the tier's saving. Leave a badge empty to hide it.

Under Names, set the three names an offer has:

  • Title shoppers see: shows above the offer on your product page. Turn off Show the title on your store to hide it.

  • Name at checkout (optional): shoppers see it next to the discount in the cart and at checkout. If you leave it empty, the title is used. It isn't translated, and a tier's own name at checkout wins over this one.

  • Name in your admin: only you and your team see it. Shopify's Discounts page lists the offer as the title followed by this name in brackets.

The rest of the step sets how the offer works with your theme:

  • Colors and sizes: click Edit on the Design tab to fine-tune the colors and sizes of each part of the offer.

  • Your theme's product page: turn on Hide your theme's quantity selector on products where this offer shows, or Show the tier's price in your theme's price to update your theme's price when shoppers pick a tier. The second one needs your theme's Price selector.

  • More options: under Button, choose Your theme's Add to cart button or The offer's own, which adds the selected tier in one click. The offer's own button isn't available with add-on products or gifts that unlock. Turn on Your theme uses a custom Add to cart button if your product page uses a button from a page builder, such as PageFly or GemPages. You can also turn on Hide your theme's variant picker, Sticky bar, Countdown timer or Low stock alert.

Step 4: Where, who and when

Choose where the offer shows, who gets it and when it runs.

  • Where it shows: the offer shows near the buy button on the product pages it covers, with no theme changes. If the check says your app embed is off, click Turn it on, switch on the Appstle Bundles app embed in the theme editor, then come back and click Check again. Until then, shoppers don't see the offer, but the discount still applies at checkout.

  • Custom location (optional): add the block to a template only if you want the offer somewhere else on the page. Click Add it for me to add it to the default product template.

  • Announcement bar: turn on Show this offer in the announcement bar to tell shoppers how close they are to the offer and when they've unlocked it.

  • After shoppers add it: with your theme's Add to cart button, your theme decides what happens next. To choose here, use the offer's own button (step 3, More options).

  • Who gets it: choose Everyone or Customers with tags. Tags must match exactly, including capital letters, and work only for logged-in customers, so guests don't see a tag-limited offer. Under More options you can also turn on Not for B2B buyers, choose Selected markets, or turn on Not in Shopify POS.

  • When: choose When I launch, or On a schedule to set a start and end date and time in your store's time zone.

  • Uses per customer: the number of times each logged-in customer can get the discount. While a limit or tags are set, guests don't see the offer, unless you turn on Still show the offer to shoppers who can't get it under Who gets it → More options. Then everyone sees it, and only eligible customers get the discount.

  • Works together with: Other product discounts, Order discounts and Shipping discounts. All three are on by default.

  • Order tags: tags added to each order the app records for this offer. The default is appstle_bundles.

Step 5: Review and launch

The last step lists anything that needs fixing under Checks and sums up your choices under At a glance. Fix any problem it lists, then click Launch offer to make the offer live, or Save as draft to save it without going live.

What shoppers see

On the product page, shoppers see the tiers as cards under the title you set, with the discounted price and the full price crossed out. The tier with the star is selected when the page opens. Shoppers add the selected tier with your theme's Add to cart button, or the offer's own button if you turned it on, and the cart gets that quantity.

At checkout, the products stay as normal line items and the saving shows as a discount. The discount is named with your Name at checkout, or with the title if you left it empty.

Things to know

  • When a product is part of more than one active volume discount, customers get the discount that was created first.

  • A live volume discount uses 1 of the 25 automatic discounts your store can have active in Shopify.

  • You can't switch a saved offer to or from Free items. Create a new offer instead.

  • If you change a launched offer between specific products and collections, saving replaces the offer's Shopify automatic discount with a new one. Shoppers keep getting the discount.

FAQs

Why doesn't the offer show on my product page?

Check these in order:

  1. The offer is live, not a draft, and its schedule has started.

  2. The product is in the offer, or in one of its collections.

  3. The Appstle Bundles app embed is on in your theme.

  4. No limit hides it. Tags and Uses per customer work only for logged-in customers. To test, log in as a matching customer instead of using a private window.

  5. No other volume discount that was created earlier covers the same product.

Why didn't a cart get the discount?

Check these:

  1. The items count toward the same tier. With the default No, the same variant only, 1 small and 1 large bag don't add up.

  2. If Discount only items added through the widget is on, the items were added through the offer.

  3. The customer hasn't used up their Uses per customer.

  4. If the cart has another discount, Works together with allows that kind of discount.

Can I add a free gift to a tier?

Yes. Click the gift icon on a tier in step 2 to add a free gift to it, or turn on Gifts that unlock as shoppers buy more. See the Progressive gifts article.

Does a volume discount work in Shopify POS?

Yes, unless you turn on Not in Shopify POS under Who gets it → More options. Turn it on if your registers run their own discounts, so the two don't add up.

Can shoppers mix different products to reach a tier?

Yes. In step 1, under Can shoppers mix items?, choose Yes, variants of one product to mix sizes or colors, or Yes, any product in this offer to mix different products.
