Order limits stop a location from taking more orders than you can handle. You set a maximum for each weekday, and once a date or time slot is full, customers can no longer choose it in the cart.
Each location has its own limits, and store pickup and local delivery are limited separately.
Before you start
For store pickup, check Enable pickup date picker in the location's Date and time pickers card. The Pickup order limits card only appears when it's checked. See Choose the days customers can pick up orders.
For local delivery, check Enable delivery date picker in Settings → Local delivery → Checkout experience and save. The Delivery order limits card only appears on your locations after that.
To limit orders per time slot, also check Enable pickup time picker in the location's Date and time pickers card, or Enable delivery time picker in Settings → Local delivery → Checkout experience and save.
Choose how to limit orders
The card offers three options. They work the same for pickup and delivery.
Option | What it does |
No pickup order limits / No delivery order limits | Customers can choose any open date and time slot. |
Limit number of pickup orders per day / Limit number of delivery orders per day | A date closes once it has taken the maximum number of orders, whatever times customers chose. |
Limit number of pickup orders per time slot / Limit number of delivery orders per time slot | Each time slot closes when it's full, and a date closes once all its slots are full. Needs the time picker. |
Set an order limit
In the app, go to Locations and open the location.
In the Store pickup or Local delivery card, click Show settings. If it's greyed out, click Enable instead, and the settings open.
In the Pickup order limits or Delivery order limits card, choose Limit number of pickup orders per day or Limit number of pickup orders per time slot. For delivery, the options say delivery instead of pickup.
Under each weekday, enter the most orders you'll accept. Leave a weekday blank for no limit.
Click Save.
The limit for a weekday applies to every date that falls on it. With a limit per time slot, it applies to each slot on that day: a limit of 5 with 30-minute pickup slots means up to 5 orders every 30 minutes.
Enter 0 to close a weekday completely. The card then shows a warning that customers can't select pickup or delivery on that day.
Set a limit for one delivery slot
With local delivery you can also give a single slot its own limit, for example for a busy lunchtime slot.
In the Delivery order limits card, choose Limit number of delivery orders per time slot.
Scroll up to the Delivery slots card and enter a number under Order limit next to the slot.
Click Save.
The Order limit column only appears while the per time slot option is selected. A slot's own limit replaces the weekday limit for that slot. If you leave it empty or enter 0, the weekday limit applies, and a weekday limit of 0 still closes the whole day.
If Delivery slot duration splits a window into shorter slots, the limit applies to each of those slots, not to the window as a whole. For example, a 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM window with a limit of 8, split Every 60 minutes, takes up to 8 orders in each hour.
Pickup slots can't have their own limit, so every pickup slot on a day uses that weekday's limit. To set up the slots themselves, see Set pickup times and time slots.
What customers see
In the cart, a full date is greyed out in the date picker and can't be chosen. A full time slot is removed from the list of times, and when every slot on a date is full, the date is greyed out too. The same applies when customers change the date of a subscription.
The checkout widget can't see how many orders a date already has. If customers choose their date at checkout, they can still pick a full date or time slot there. Only a weekday limit of 0 applies at checkout.
Things to know
Only orders placed while a limit is on are counted. Orders placed before you turned limits on don't take a place, so dates that already had bookings can end up with more orders than the limit.
Each order takes one place, however many items it has. Subscription renewals take a place when the renewal order is created.
Cancelled orders free their place.
Changing an order's date doesn't move its place. If you change an order's pickup or delivery date in the app, it still takes a place on its original date.
Changing slot times resets their counts. Orders are matched to a slot by its start and end time. If you change a slot's times or the slot length, orders already booked don't count toward the new slots. Per day limits aren't affected.
Pickup and delivery are counted separately. An order counts against the location and method the customer chose.
A date can go slightly over its limit. Places are checked before checkout, so two customers who check out at the same moment can both take the last place.
Other rules still apply. A full date is one more reason a date can be greyed out, next to your open days, blackout dates and preparation time.
To limit products, not orders, use the Daily inventory card on the location. It caps how many units of a product you sell per date.
FAQs
Why can customers still choose a date that should be full?
Check that the limit is saved on the right location and method, and that the card isn't set to No pickup order limits or No delivery order limits. A blank weekday means no limit, and orders placed before you turned the limit on aren't counted. If customers choose their date at checkout, they can still pick a full date there (see What customers see).
Why can't I choose the per time slot option?
It needs the time picker. Check Enable pickup time picker or Enable delivery time picker (see Before you start), or choose the per day option instead.
I set a limit per time slot, but dates never fill up. Why?
The time picker is probably off. Per time slot limits need it: without it, the card shows a warning and only weekdays with a limit of 0 are blocked. Turn the time picker back on, or choose the per day option instead.
Why can't customers choose a certain weekday at all?
That weekday probably has a limit of 0. Enter a higher number or clear the field, then click Save. If the weekday doesn't have a limit of 0, check your open days, blackout dates and preparation time.
How do I make more places available?
Raise the number for that weekday, or the slot's Order limit for a delivery slot, then click Save. Cancelling an order also frees its place.
