Give points for social media follows and shares

Learn how to give customers points or store credit for opening your social media pages or sharing a link to your store.

Social media ways to earn give customers points, or store credit, when they click through to one of your social media pages or share a link from your store.

They help you grow your following and spread the word about your store. Each customer earns each one once.

You manage them on the Ways to earn page with your other ways to earn. See What are ways to earn?

Choose a social media way to earn

Eight ways to earn are under Social and sign-ups in the gallery. A store can have one of each. This table shows what a customer's click on Claim does for each.

They all work the same way, so this article uses Follow on Instagram as the example. Join the newsletter and Sign up for texts are in the same part of the gallery and have their own articles: Join the newsletter and Sign up for texts.

Add a social media way to earn

  1. In the Appstle Loyalty app, click Ways to earn, then click Add a way to earn. The Points program editor opens on the gallery.

  2. Click the one you want, such as Follow on Instagram. It's under Social and sign-ups.

  3. Click Add way to earn. The editor opens its settings.

  4. Under Link customers open, enter the full address of your page, starting with https://. For the two Share ways to earn, the field is called Link customers share: enter the page you want customers to share.

  5. Go through the five steps below, then click Save at the top right of the editor.

The link is required. Once you add a way to earn, it shows Added in the gallery, and clicking it opens the one you have.

The five steps

The panel on the right shows each step with a summary of its setting. Click a step to change it.

Step

What you set

Reward

Under Customers get, choose Points or Store credit, then enter the amount and the link. Store credit needs a plan that includes it.

Who can earn

Set Only customers with these tags and Not customers with these tags.

When points arrive

Choose Right away, After a waiting period (you set the days) or After you approve them. To approve them, click Open Pending points.

Schedule

Choose Always on or Between dates (Starts and Ends, in your store's time zone). Schedules need a plan that includes them.

What customers see

Set the Name and Description customers read, an Icon and the Message when points arrive shown in their points history.

Who earns it

  • Only signed-in customers earn it. Customers who aren't signed in see Claim, which sends them to sign in first.

  • Points come with the click. When a signed-in customer clicks Claim, your link opens in a new tab and they earn the points. The app can't check whether they followed, liked, subscribed or shared.

  • Each customer earns each way to earn once. If you change the link or the amount later, customers who already earned it keep what they got and can't earn it again.

  • Your tags in Who can earn decide who earns it. They're checked when the customer clicks Claim.

  • With Require Customers to Opt In to the Loyalty Program on in More → Advanced Settings, customers see a join screen instead of your ways to earn until they join.

  • Customers whose points you imported are left out only if you turn on Leave out customers whose points were imported, under More options in Who can earn.

What customers see

Customers find your social media ways to earn on the loyalty page, and in the loyalty popup when they click Ways to earn.

  • Customers who haven't earned it see Claim. Change the button's text in Design.

  • A customer who has earned it sees a tick instead of Claim, in the popup and on the loyalty page.

  • Customers who don't match your tags don't see it. With Only customers with these tags set, that includes customers who aren't signed in.

Things to know

  • Turn on the Appstle Loyalty app embed in your theme. While it's off, the loyalty popup doesn't show. See Set up your loyalty program.

  • The popup and the loyalty page show only while Show loyalty on your store is on in Design → Customize → Visibility. See Choose who sees loyalty and where it shows.

  • Each claim that earns sends the Point Earn email (Credits Earn for store credit), if it's on in More → Email Templates.

  • Because points come with the click, keep the amount small. Customers can earn it without following or sharing.

  • If you turn on Only on some days each month under More options in the Schedule step, customers still see Claim on other days, but a click on those days earns nothing.

  • Changes in the editor reach your store when you click Save. If the update to your storefront doesn't finish, the page shows a message with a Retry button.

  • While it's paused, nobody earns it.

Troubleshooting

  • A customer clicked Claim but got no points: check that they were signed in, that the app embed and the Active switch are on, that their tags match, and that there's no Starts or Ended badge on the Ways to earn page.

  • One customer never gets points: find them on the Customers page. Customers marked Omitted or Omitted by customer don't earn.

  • Claim is missing or does nothing: open the way to earn and check that Link customers open (or Link customers share) has a full link starting with https://.

  • The points are pending: look at When points arrive. If it waits or needs approval, find them in Customers → Approve Pending Transactions.

  • A customer didn't get them a second time: each social media way to earn is earned once per customer.

  • Claim still shows in the popup after a customer clicked it: the tick replaces it a little later, once they open another page. Clicking Claim again opens your link but gives no more points.

  • A customer says they got points without following: points come with the click. The app can't check whether they followed.

  • It doesn't show in the popup: check the Active switch, the badges and the customer's tags. With Only customers with these tags set, only signed-in customers with one of those tags see it.
